  • The Videoguys' Insider Vol 1 Issue 1
In this issue of the Videoguys' Insider I talk with Tim Wilson, Director of Marketing for Boris FX, which is introducing their latest version - Boris FX 6.

Videoguy: Boris FX has always been one of my favorite 3D FX packages. My customers and I have been using it for years, since version 2. I've always loved the power, control and flexibility that Boris gives me when creating 3D animated transitions. With 6.0 Boris FX becomes much, much more then a 3D FX plug-in!

    New Boris FX6 interface

Tim: Boris FX 6.0 is a major upgrade to our award-winning 3D compositing and effects application. Some of the filters, like 3D Image Shatter (one of our new Particles filters) very much take advantage of that truly three dimensional environment.

I've always been especially fond of the lighting filters in Boris RED, and am delighted that they've now made their way into FX 6.0. In addition to the obvious sorts of things you'd want to do with lights, Light Sweep effects, for example, or highlighting one person in a scene, our lighting filters allow video to be mapped as mattes and gels for creative effects, including some transition effects like you've never seen before.

Another set of tools that people have never seen as transition devices before is Displacement Mapping. The idea is to use the channel information from one image (usually luminance or alpha channels) to move the pixels in another image. When the two layers involved are the two tracks in a transition, the interaction between them becomes very dynamic, almost like a morph. It's a very advanced compositing effect that has never been available in this price range before, and we have two dozen pre-set transitions that take advantage of it.

There are in fact hundreds of presets included in FX 6.0, taking advantage of all these new filter and transition capabilities. With the Library Browser, you can see animated previews of all of them, and easily add your own saved effects to the library.

Videoguy: WOW! That is a lot of cool new features that I'm sure my customers are going to love. I get calls and emails all the time from customers who want to add cool FX like Fire, Rain & Snow. Can you explain a little more some different ways these can be used?

Tim:I think people are really going to be floored by our new natural effects. They include Clouds, Comet, Fire, Rain, Snow, Sparks and Stars. The first thing to remember is that most of these natural filters are auto-animated. That means they're already in motion, so you don't have to spend a lot of time guessing how to use them.

They also support alpha channels, which means powerful ways to interact with other layers. That could mean snow piling up on an imported logo, or rain bouncing off a Boris FX cube.

Since every layer in Boris FX includes an alpha channel, that means endless possibilities for combining filters. One of my favorites starts with Film Burn, which makes amazing organic transitions, and adds Fire to those edges, so that one layer of video appears to burn up to reveal another.

Videoguy: Very cool! I can't wait to start adding these to my productions. One of the things that I really like about 6.0 is that you are now including audio with previews. Why is this such an important new feature.

Tim: Transition effects don't always begin on the first frame. And of course, Boris FX does much, much more than transitions. There are times when you really need for effects to be timed to music, dialog, maybe both. FX 6.0 allows unlimited layers of audio to be imported as scratch tracks, scrubbed during effects set-up, and included on preview to RAM. You can even see the audio waveforms to very quickly start synching effects. It's a major productivity boost.

Productivity is a major emphasis in FX 6.0. More options for Preview to RAM (including half and quarter rate previews, and the ability to select only part of an effect for previewing), OpenGL support for faster redraws, dual processor support for faster rendering, Altivec enhancement on Macintosh G4 computers, slip-and-slide of footage in the timeline, new import and export options, dozens of new keyboard shortcuts….the list of new productivity features in FX 6.0 is very, very long.

I should mention, too, that FX 6.0 also supports many Adobe After Effects filters, which means that editors can now be using those directly inside their editing applications. All the biggies are here, including Final Effects Complete, Cinelook, and many more. You want options? We're giving you options!

Videoguy: GREAT JOB! I'm going to be using these a lot in the future. I just have to compliment you and the gang at Boris. Not only have you made FX more powerful then ever, you've made it easier to use and more productive. I know a lot of my customers are going to want to upgrade. Can we offer them any special deals?

Customers who purchased Boris FX 5 after April 23rd, 2001 can register directly with Boris FX for a FREE upgrade. If you purchased Boris FX prior to this date, you can order the upgrade directly from us for $199.95!!

We also offer a really great deal on Boris FX when you purchase it with any of our video capture cards - Just $199.95!! That's a $200 savings from our regular $399.95 sale price!!

Videoguy: Before we go, I'd like to give my readers a quick insight into your background. You've been an active member in on-line communities and a producer of training materials, how did you end up with Boris?

Tim: I bought Boris FX on the day it was introduced, in 1995. It immediately became the core effects package in my video production business. Flying logos, keys, blurs, color corrections, and much more, made incredibly easy and flexible - it really changed the entire course of my business by offering me a wide range of new features to offer my clients.

This was about the same time that the internet began really taking off as a place for people with common interests to find each other. I became involved with the Ron Lindeboom and the World Wide Users Groups, also known as the WWUG. Over the years, I became the host of a number of communities there, including the forum for Boris FX. I regularly wrote articles for Ron showing how I'd used Boris FX in my own productions, hoping to help other users see the enormous potential it offered them.

When somebody at Boris was unable to attend a scheduled demo, they asked me to step in. I loved it - as much fun as I was having on the internet, it was a blast connecting with users in a more direct way. I started doing demos all over the country, which led to an opportunity to create a series of training videotapes with Desktop Images. These allowed me to go much, much deeper than either online tutorials or live, but brief, demos ever could.

So when the folks at Boris suggested a year later that I come to work for them, it seemed like a perfect fit. After nearly 20 years in video production, it's been a big change, but I'm loving it.
