  • The Videoguys' Insider Vol 1 Issue 5
For this months Videoguys Insider I'm going across the Atlantic to Germany to talk to Joern Lembke the Product Marketing Manager for Pinnacle's new Pro-One real-time 3D card and the entire product line that includes the DC1000 and DV500 series.

Videoguy: Joern I have to compliment you and Pinnacle on the incredible amount of new technology and features you've unleashed with the Pro-ONE. This is definitely the most powerful real-time 3D card on the market. Can you explain some of the technology behind the card?

Joern: Pinnacle's Pro-ONE stands for the next generation of Real Time video editing platform. Pro-ONE allows multiple simultaneous real-time video effects including 3D effects. Furthermore, Pro-ONE allows real time mapping of video onto textured 3D models that may be individually animated in 3D space. The famous Hollywood FX library is used here … and the best thing about it is: you don't need to wait for rendering!

Videoguy: I've been a huge fan of Hollywood FX since version 1.0. I've always felt the interface was super easy to use and that the FX were much more then just simple 3D transitions. What you really get are animated 3D transitions with built in graphics and shapes that you can tie directly into your content.

Warning: Joern gave me a bunch of animated GIFs to demonstrate some of the amazing features of the Pro-ONE. I realize that we have way to many animations on this page, but we wanted to give you a real good look at the real-time power the Pro-ONE delivers!!

Videoguy: Now you've made it all real-time. Can you tell us a little more about what exactly HFX RT can do?

Joern: The Real Time 3D engine of Pro-ONE can be used to create typical broadcast looks such as a flying “sports slab” transition, where video is mapped in real time onto a 3D object with texture-mapped graphics on the sides. Of course, these “pre-canned” effects everybody knows from TV can be modified according to the editor's personal taste and creativity.

As Pro-ONE offers broadcast-style 3D effects we've successfully put a lot of engineering effort in creating these effects at a professional video quality level.

Videoguy: I'm glad you mentioned the video quality of the 3D FX of the Pro-ONE. I think they look great, but we've seen some claims from your competitors that they are not. Here's your chance to set the record straight.

Joern: And I'm glad that these comments we exclusively hear from our competitors …
Our Pro-ONE customers and the audiences of our recent road shows in the US are satisfied with the video quality. However, with our new software release 1.5 we found a way to even more improve the quality of NTSC shots that have been made under difficult light conditions. With the known restrictions of 4:1:1 color sub-sampling of DV25 the result is optimum video quality.

Videoguy: While we're getting technical here, I need to bring up Win2K driver support. We've finally gotten new drivers that support both Win2K and XP. I'm happy to report that we've tested them extensively and they are working great. We recommend running the Pro-One on Win2K, XP, 98Se or ME. That said, what happened?

Joern: Thanks! Pinnacle decided to introduce the Win 98/Me software first as the vast majority of our users are using these OSs. Also, we have to admit that fixing several Win XP/2000 bugs in the software meant a much bigger engineering than originally expected. And furthermore, the target was to deliver at least the same level of stability and performance with this Win XP/2000 release as with the initial Win Me CD. I have to thank all our beta testers worldwide for their professional work that helped us to reach this goal.

Videoguy: We are happy and proud to be one of your beta test sights. It was a long road and the bottom line is this: The Pro-ONE now rocks on Win2K and Win XP!! As a beta test site were testing the new OS compatibility, but we also discovered a couple of new features. Care to tell us about some of them?

Joern: Pro-ONE now supports reverse playback in Real Time (off the Premiere timeline). DV Tools in version 2.1 offers several improvements like the automatic audio re-sampling which is required for certain camcorders. The Pinnacle key-frame editor was enhanced with optional spline interpolation for motion paths, i.e. for PIPs. A new preset manager allows easy export and import of key-framer presets.

Videoguy: As you know we've been offering the new Pinnacle Impressions DVD Pro for FREE with our Pro-One sales (Note: FREE Impressions DVD Pro offer expired 1/31/02) . Not only is this a $400 value to the end user, but it is one heck of a DVD authoring bundle. How important is DVD authoring and why is the Pro-ONE the right tool for the job?

Joern:Pro-ONE offers an optimized workflow for DVD-authoring. The Pro-ONE user does all editing in native DV format with highest productivity - means no quality loss and minimum time efforts. When editing is done you directly export your project to *Impression DVD* by the push of a button. Traditional timeline editing and DVD authoring are seamlessly connected.

Videoguy: WOW!! This will make the Pro-ONE the most powerful real-time DVD solution on the market!!

We've created our own Pro-ONE DVD bundle that includes the Pro-ONE, Impressions DVD Pro, the Pioneer DVR-A03 DVD burner, 5 blank DVD-Rs and 1 DVD-RW disk for $1499!!

Joern: That is an excellent deal Gary! I'm sure you guys are selling a bunch of them.

Videoguy: We are! When you combine the all the Real-Time power of the Pro-ONE with DVD authoring, you've got a complete solution that's hard to beat.

While DVD is hot, it's the Real-Time capabilities of the Pro-ONE that really make it so special. There are some real-time capabilities of the Pro-ONE that I want you to clarify. Just how many real-time filters, layers and FX can I do at the same time and still not have to render?

Joern: Pro-ONE can do up to ten effects simultaneously.
For example, a title may be faded and animated in 3D space while simultaneously using any transition between two video clips - and this is possible even with the most complex 3D composited transitions. The Image Correction filter of Pro-ONE can be used to adjust the brightness, contrast and saturation of any video clip, even if the clip is used in a transition and/or if a title is superimposed and animated. And finally, a speed change may be applied to any video clip and will be performed in real time, regardless of any other simultaneous effects

Videoguy: That is incredible. It's worth noting that the speed controller for the Pro-ONE is field based - giving it the best quality real-time slomo in the industry. Even more important is the total cost of ownership. You don't have to invest 3 grand in a killer dual processor workstation to get all this power. A single 1.4 GHz Pentium 4 or Athlon will give me full real-time performance!!
One more real-time feature I want to talk about is the image stabilizer. As soon as I saw it, I loved it. I also realized that it was based on the Commotion's award winning motion tracker capability. Can you tell us more about the stabilizer and even more importantly, what other synergies we can expect from Pinnacles software units in future products.

Joern: You're right: Pro-ONE's Image Stabilizer filter is based upon motion tracking algorithms of CommotionPro, Pinnacle's compositing software that is used in Hollywood movie productions such as *Gladiator*. The Image Stabilizer first analyzes your footage by picking and tracking points and edges to determine the camera movement, and it is intelligent enough to recognize intentional pans and zooms. In a second real time step, the motion is compensated by zooming into the image and moving against the original camera movement. We will see more features using our motion tracking technology in future, features that are useful to pros as well as hobbyists.

Videoguy: Thanx so much for taking the time to do this interview with us. The Pro-ONE is one of the most important new products of 2001 and it looks like we can expect even more great things in 2002.

Joern: That's correct. As the Pro-ONE technology is a combination of software and hardware acceleration it doesn't require a high-end PC because it uses own hardware but it is also a scaleable solution with lots of opportunities for new fascinating features in 2002 and after …

Just a few more of the incredible real-time Hollywood FX you can choose from!!

Videoguy: When you were in our place this fall I remember you commented on how cool you though our Premiere EZ keyboard was. How about we make this special offer to our readers who decide to purchase a Pro-One before year end.

    Buy a Pro-ONE and get a Premiere EZ keyboard for $100 !!! ($129.95 value)

Joern: Great idea Gary, lets do it!!! Make sure your customers use coupon code #JOERNEZ when they order!
