Drag, Drop & Edit!!
Screenplay lets you capture and catalog your clips.
With Screenplay you simply plug in your video source and a monitor and start capturing video! No tricky installation or compatibility problems. After each clip is captured you get a thumbnail image to make using your captured video clips super easy. You can then go into each clip and trim it further, selcting frame accurate in and out points!
The Bin Area at the top left of the screen for accessing video or audio clips, transitions, graphics and effects.
Video and audio clips can be dragged and dropped in
your desired order onto the Storyboard timeline at the
bottom of the screen. Transitions dragged to the
Storyboard are performed in real time, with no tedious
waits for rendering. Graphics are also dragged to the
Storyboard and placed in the titling track. Your options in
the Effects Bins include slo-mo, film look, color effects
and more, all in real time.
Titler
Titler Icon designated by the letter "A" provides high
quality True Type fonts in your choice of sizes, scroll or
crawl (coming soon), drop shadow, rotation, and many
other font options. The titler also includes a powerful
drawing tool to create and manipulate complex shapes.
Toolbox
Toolbox Icon is where you can choose from a wide
range of user options such as compression ratio, input
sources, and even your choice of operating language
(English, Spanish, German, French, Italian or
Portuguese).
Viewing Window
At the top right of the interface next to the Bin Area is the
Viewing Window. Instead of a pre-view, you get a
real-view of each selected clip, graphic, transition and
effect in real time. All at the instant you select them.
This 1/4 screen Viewing Window features true YUV video color space, instead of deceptive RGB color of computer monitors. So what you see is really what you get.
Also convenient is the optional wireless IR keyboard. This ScreenPlay accessory gives you error-free remote operation from across the room on your couch or easy chair.
You can also add to ScreenPlay's internal 60 GB hard drive by plugging external media storage or backup into the Ultra-SCSI connector port.
Screenplay includes a digital I/O upgrade with DV-1394 and a PCMCIA (PC card) port for inputting DV and digital still photos.
So from simple controls to complex capabilities, ScreenPlay is designed to grow with you. Which is pretty magical in itself.
Screenplay FAQs
What type of compression engine does ScreenPlay use?
Architecturally, the system could utilize any of the compression
engines available on the market – M-JPEG, MPEG or Wavelet. We
have chosen Wavelet because we feel it offers the best mix of quality
and efficiency (hard disk utilization). M-JPEG offers excellent quality,
but poor efficiency (it uses the most hard disk space to maintain its
quality). MPEG offers the best efficiency (can compress the video
more while still maintaining decent quality), but the poorest of the
three in terms of quality – MPEG has a tough time with horizontal
and vertical lines and with lots of motion, such as leaves blowing on
a tree. Wavelet offers the best quality of the three – about a 20%
quality improvement over M-JPEG at comparable compression
settings – and an efficiency rating that falls between M-JPEG and
MPEG. To summarize, we were willing to give up a little efficiency
(versus MPEG) in order to gain the best quality (versus MPEG and
M-JPEG). The Wavelet chip struck a great balance between the two,
particularly considering the low cost of storage these days.
Is there a file size limitation for ScreenPlay?
ScreenPlay is more a digital appliance than a computer, and
therefore doesn’t incorporate many of the computer metaphors such
as file management. In ScreenPlay, a file is synonymous with a
video clip; a collection of video clips (with audio, titles and effects) is
called a project. The only limitation is that a video clip cannot exceed
36GB in size (2 hours and 20 minutes at the highest quality setting).
If you ever encountered a situation, splitting the clip would resolve
the issue.
What software does ScreenPlay ship with?
ScreenPlay ships with SP-edit, ScreenPlay's editing application, and
SP-title, ScreenPlay's titler. SP-edit includes a transition package, color
effects package, special effects package, graphics package and an audio
package. Both SP-edit and SP-title are real-time applications.
Will 3rd-party developers be able to create plug-ins for ScreenPlay?
Absolutely! We support an open systems approach and encourage
3rd party development. 3rd-party development is currently underway
– look for many exciting plug-ins to come!
How do you upgrade the system?
Upgrades are provided on CD-ROM and loaded via ScreenPlay’s
internal CD-ROM drive.
How many fonts does ScreenPlay come with?
ScreenPlay supports TrueType fonts. The unit ships with 8 True-Type
fonts(check your software disk under" Extras"), however the intent is that
the end user access any number and variety of fonts via CD-ROM,
provided they are True-Type.
What types of video formats does ScreenPlay support?
ScreenPlay supports S-video, composite video and DV (DV-1394 - via
ScreenPlay's digital I/O upgrade). There are two sets of S-video and
composite video inputs and outputs - one set of each, and the DV I/O, is
conveniently located behind a front panel access door for camcorder
input.
How much video can I store on ScreenPlay's 60.0GB hard drive?
That would depend on the quality setting you choose while recording.
ScreenPlay's hard drive can hold between about 210 minutes at the
highest quality setting (broadcast) to over 18 hours at the lowest quality
setting (demo).
When you add an additional external drive, is the internal drive
disabled?
No, both drives would be enabled, and ScreenPlay would view the
combined storage as one drive. ScreenPlay would operate across
both, seeing one 120GB hard drive (60GB internal + 60GB external) if
you were to add an external 9GB drive, for example.
Can I increase the amount storage?
Yes, adding additional storage is convenient with ScreenPlay’s
external Ultra-wide SCSI port, which can support an additional 13
SCSI devices – the sky is the limit!
How much hard drive space does the operating system (OS) and
editing applications use up?
None. ScreenPlay’s extremely tight and efficient code is loaded in
just 4MB of flash ROM. Quite amazing when you consider that the
combination of popular PC-based editing applications with Windows
NT© typically takes up about 160MB of hard disk space. The benefit
here is pure A/V storage on your hard drives and the fact that your
system continues to run even if your hard drive fails!
What operating system does ScreenPlay use?
ScreenPlay uses its own proprietary operating system. This
operating system was designed from the ground up for editing, and
the advantage is a stable, efficient real-time operating system.
What is the PC card slot used for?
The PC card (PCMCIA Type II) will be used initially to incorporate
still images from digital still cameras – a large number of digital still
cameras use Smart Cards©, Memory Sticks© and other memory
devices that utilize PC cards as their interface to computers or other
devices. There are many other uses planned for the PC-card slot in
the future that will be announced as we come closer to release.
How do I organize material that I am recording?
Logging incoming video/audio is easy with ScreenPlay. You have two
options. The first is to hit "record" to start recording, "stop" (international
stop (square) symbol) to stop recording. As soon as you hit "stop", you
have created a "clip" in the clips bin of ScreenPlay's editing screen. This
is how you populate your clips bin. An attractive alternative is to hit the
"break/split" button (or "break/split" key on the keyboard - two squares
with forward slash between them) while recording. Each time you do this,
you create a new clip - a great way to do a rough edit on the incoming
material. The longest one clip can be - without hitting stop or break/split -
is 36GB, or 2 hours and 20 minutes long at the highest quality setting.
How do I record video and audio to ScreenPlay?
Video and audio can be recorded to ScreenPlay via camcorder, tape
deck or auxiliary audio source. Simply mouse click on the "go to record"
button immediately below the interface's Viewing Window, or hold down
the shift key and hit the "record" key on the keyboard (red dot). This will
bring you to the record screen where you can choose what you want to
capture - video & audio, video only or audio only - the source (which
connectors on SP) and the quality setting. Hitting the record once again
in this window will begin the record process.
