About Matrox RTMac
The Matrox RTMac realtime editing card is fully optimized for Adobe Premiere 6.0 software and seamlessly integrates into Power Mac G4 computers. Editors work with three layers of video and graphics in real time and create broadcast-quality effects instantly, without rendering. In addition to the productivity boost from realtime editing, the RTMac also brings other important benefits to streamline video production workflow. Matrox RTMac complements Apple FireWire support built into Power Mac G4 computers with analog video capture and output. Using the RTMac breakout box, source material from analog devices can be digitized for use in DV editing projects. Finished projects can be recorded to videotape in real time for distribution. Full resolution viewing on an NTSC or PAL video monitor is supported without the need to connect a DV device to the Power Mac G4. Dual-screen editing is an added benefit of Matrox RTMac. Users simply connect a second computer monitor to increase their Adobe Premiere workspace.

Matrox RTMac was developed through close collaboration between Matrox and Apple. It is fully optimized for Final Cut Pro and seamlessly integrates into Power Mac G4 computers.
The incredible productivity boost you get with Matrox RTMac will leave you wondering how you ever managed without it.
Realtime creativity
Realtime editing lets you experiment to your heart's content.
There's no penalty for changing your mind.
Try out any number of different effects and transitions. View them instantly on your computer and video monitors simultaneously. Get exactly the look you want every time.
Matrox RTMac is powered by Matrox Flex 3D, a revolutionary video mixing and effects architecture that exploits the explosive performance of award-winning Matrox graphics accelerator technology to provide a wide variety of broadcast-quality digital video effects in real time. With Matrox RTMac and Final Cut Pro, video transitions and keyframeable motion effects happen instantly.
Enhanced productivity
In addition to the productivity boost you get from realtime editing, the RTMac also brings you
other important benefits to streamline your workflow.
Matrox RTMac complements Apple FireWire support built into Power Mac G4 computers with analog video capture and output. Using the RTMac breakout box, you can digitize source material from analog devices to use in your DV editing projects and record your finished projects to videotape for distribution. You also get full resolution viewing on an NTSC or PAL video monitor without connecting a DV device to your Power Mac G4.
Dual-screen editing is an added benefit of Matrox RTMac. Simply connect a second computer monitor to increase your Final Cut Pro workspace.
Q. For whom is this product designed?
Matrox RTMac brings creative flexibility to professional content creators. Corporate
communicators, educational facilities, digital filmmakers, and multimedia producers will
all benefit from RTMac's realtime editing performance, analog I/O and secondary VGA
output.
Q. What are realtime effects?
When using a video editing system without realtime hardware, video effects typically
have to "render" before they can be viewed. Even simple effects such as wipes and
dissolves can take several seconds of computing time before they are displayed. If the
effect doesn't look right, you have to adjust it and render again. All these seconds quickly
add up to wasted hours during an edit session. Often, you are forced to sacrifice your
creative vision just to get the job done.
With the addition of special hardware such as the Matrox RTMac card, effects are created
instantly, without rendering. You work more efficiently and you can try out any number
of different effects in a very short time to get exactly the look you want.
Q. What are the key features of Matrox RTMac?
Q. How do I know what effects are realtime enabled?
Q. If I exceed the realtime performance available, does Matrox RTMac accelerate
rendering?
To accelerate rendering, you would need a faster Power Mac G4.
Q. What are the system requirements?
Q: Can I use a Power Mac G4 without an AGP motherboard?
Matrox RTMac will not work with the original PowerMac G4 computer that was first
introduced to market {sometimes referred to as PowerMac G4 (PCI graphics)}. The
easiest way to tell if you have a "first generation" Power Mac G4 is by the fact that it
only has PCI slots. There is NO AGP slot. This PCI-only motherboard has performance
characteristics that are NOT SUITABLE for use with Matrox RTMac.
Q. How do I get support for a second monitor?
The Matrox RTMac PCI card has a standard 15-pin VGA output connector so you can
connect a VGA monitor to it. Your primary monitor is connected to the AGP graphics
card that came with your Power Mac G4. A second monitor connects to the RTMac card.
You configure your monitors in the Monitors control panel. The AGP card used for
primary monitor support must be the model that comes standard with Power Mac G4
computers. Currently these are the ATI Rage 128 Pro, NVidia GeForce 2 MX, and ATI
RADEON.
Note: Current Apple displays use a proprietary Apple Display Connector (ADC). They
cannot be connected to Matrox RTMac, which has a standard 15-pin VGA connector.
Q. Will I be able to run RTMac with both Final Cut Pro and Premiere on the same
system? Are there different versions of the hardware?
You will be able to run both Final Cut Pro and Premiere with RTMac on the same
system. There is only one version of the RTMac card, but there is different RTMac
software. You will need to install and run each application and its associated RTMac
software on different partitions on your hard drive.
Q. What about Mac OS X support?
We do not have a delivery date at this time.
Q. Does Matrox RTMac provide any functionality for other applications, like
WYSIWYG for Adobe After Effects or Discreet Combustion?
Yes. Through its support of QuickTime and it's NTSC/PAL analog output/display
capabilities, users of packages like Adobe After Effects or Discreet Combustion get
NTSC/PAL viewing of their work. You simply select Matrox RTMac in the application's
preferences settings for video output. Of course, you are only viewing your projects as
fast as the Power Mac G4 will process them, but you are able to check colors and
positioning of elements on an NTSC or PAL monitor. Other applications may let you
select Matrox RTMac for NTSC/PAL viewing of the workspace window. Please check
with the manufacturer. Note: Adobe After Effects 5.0 or later, or Discreet Combustion
1.011 or later is required.
Q. Will RTMac accelerate other applications?
No. RTMac provides realtime effects capabilities for a subset of either Final Cut Pro or
Adobe Premiere's effects.
Q. How do I get my video footage from my DV camera onto the hard
disk?
The DV capture process is the same whether you are using Matrox RTMac or not. You
plug your DV device into the FireWire port of your Power Mac G4 and capture your DV
clips using either Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere.
Q. What about capture from analog sources like a Hi-8 camera or
Betacam SP deck?
You connect your analog device to either the S-video or composite input connectors on
the Matrox RTMac breakout box and use Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere. You also
have two RCA input connectors for stereo audio. Matrox RTMac digitizes the analog
signals and simultaneously compresses them to the DV format for use with your native-DV
footage. You are always working with DV clips on your Adobe Premiere timeline. If
you are working in NTSC, your clips are captured at 720 x 480 at 29.97 frames per
second (fps) with audio at 48 kHz. If you are working in PAL, your clips are captured at
720 x 576 at 25 fps, with audio at 48 kHz.
Q. How do I prepare my projects for output?
When you've finished your projects, you can record them in real time to analog tape
without rendering. If you've only got cuts in your sequence, you don't even need to render
when you record to DV tape. If you do have effects on your timeline, those parts of your
project must be rendered and compressed back to DV, but you'll only have to do it once,
at the very end of your production.
Q. How do I prepare projects for output on DVD?
You can simply export your projects as QuickTime files and use Apple iDVD authoring
software (bundled with Power Mac G4 computers shipped with Superdrives).
Alternatively, you can purchase and use Apple DVD Studio Pro (sold separately).
