Quadrant VideoWave
Note: As of January 31, 1996 we had not yet received a working sample of the VideoWave. On Feb 17, I got a fax informing me that the VideoWave has been scrapped. For those of you looking for a good quality video capture card for under $500 that works great with EIDE drives, check out the miro DC10.
About VideoWave and wavelets
Wavelets are a very low loss compression technology, so as a result you can capture more high resolution video per gig of drive space. As a result, at 20:1 compression the VideoWave can deliver the same picture quality as a Motion JPEG capture card at 10:1. Even more important, because the video can be compressed more, it can be captured using a standard EIDE hard drive. This eliminates the need for home videographers to invest in expensive SCSI storage systems.At high compressions (20:1 or more) wavelets deliver a sharper image with less artifacting. This is why a 20:1 wavelet looks as good as a 10:1 MJPEG compressed video. At low compressions (under 8:1) wavelet compressed video takes up as much space as MJPEG, and also requires AV SCSI drives for smooth playback. It has yet to be demonstrated that wavelet compression below 8:1 looks as good as MJPEG at the same compression.
