The DC2000 is a video encoding and editing solution offering broadcast
quality and real-time video processing.
The onboard MPEG2 hardware encodes analog or digital video directly into
MPEG2 streams, featuring efficient IP or IBP frames. Encoded materials
can be used for DVD productions or other high quality MPEG2 delivery
solutions. Frame accurate real-time MPEG2 deltaframe editing is provided
by Pinnacles patented SmartGOP™ technology.
Based on a dual-stream digital video engine DC2000 plays transitions, titles,

Native MPEG2
For the first time MPEG2 IBP material can be produced completely in
real-time. The native editing mode supports even video material taken from
DVD. INSTANT DVD™ exports the streams for further usage on DVD or
MPEG2 video servers.
All MPEG2 frame types as I-, IP- and IBP-frames are supported for real-time

DC2000 includes two levels of machine control for video editing. DC2000
includes Pipeline ProVTR machine control for professional serial deck
control of equipment like Betacam and VVTR sources. When the optional
DV I/O is installed it automatically enables complete DV device control
through the IEEE-1394 Firewire connection.
DC2000 with the optional DV I/O captures from the DV source directly into
4:2:2 MPEG-2 video in real time. This protects the video from color drift that
can occur with the native DV 4:1:1 (NTSC) or 4:2:0 (PAL) signal. When the
project is done the timeline can be played back to the DV device with no
additional rendering. Nowhere is DV and MPEG-2 joined together with more
power and quality.
The next generation of video is digital and MPEG-2 is the world-wide digital
standard. With the DC2000DV, Pinnacle Systems offers a
non-linear video editing system that meets the highest quality standard for
MPEG-2 productions. The standard according to which the miroVIDEO
DC2000 works is known as “4:2:2 Profile at Main Layer"; its abbreviation,
422P@ML, is considered to be a mark of ideal qualitative prerequisites for
non-linear video editing.Besides standardisation and data compatibility, the essential advantage of MPEG-2 is a highly efficient compression method that affects respective groups of pictures (GOP) of the original material when generating the digital data stream. Equipped with SmartGOP technology, the miroVIDEO DC2000 can edit MPEG-2 videos frame-by-frame even within the compressed groups of pictures.
What makes this product special, however, is its incorporation of classic post-production in real time in other words, without time-consuming software rendering. A real-time effects mixer outputs entire productions or creative ideas to the video monitor in full quality as soon as they have been arranged.
The combination of MPEG-2 hardware codec and real-time effects mixer marks the advent of dual-stream technology on standard desktop computers. No comparable video editing system offers more productivity, since processing is visible instantly in full-quality video. In addition, videos can be processed for digital data media such as DVD.
The DC2000DV processes analog (S-Video, Composite, Component) and digital (DV, IEEE-1394) signals via corresponding inputs and outputs in real time.

MPEG2-IP is ideal for use on standard computers, since it makes optimum use of the available bandwidth of these systems and supports high quality, multi-file playback. This fulfills the prerequisites for realizing real-time effects on standard PCs.
Files are saved either in AVI format or, for compatibility with other MPEG-2 systems, as separate streams (e.g. video elementary and audio PCM). Optionally, the IBP compression method can also be used. This material is suitable for use in the Internet or for subsequent processing with DVD authoring software.
SmartGOP
For the first time, this technology makes it possible to edit compressed
MPEG-2 groups of pictures frame-by-frame without a loss in quality. The
SmartGOP software manages the compressed groups of pictures
belonging to a video and permits direct access to individual frames.
The I-frame myth: It has been published that I-frame is the only MPEG-2 video compression format that can be edited frame accurately. This is not true. I-frame offers no advantage for accuracy with today's technology. Though fully compatible with I-Frame for open systems support, Pinnacle Systems DC2000 and DVD1000 use a patented SmartGOP technology thatallows 100% frame accurate editing of the IPP format they use to capture video.

Adobe Premiere 5.1 RT w/ Real-time Processing

Adobe Premiere RT software's real-time capabilities, enabled by an expansion of the Media Abstraction Layer in Premiere 5.1, allow video editors to add transitions, apply filters and create 2D and 3D video motion without having to render the effects. Hardware developers who take advantage of this new API can offer their Adobe Premiere RT customers significantly improved performance for faster processing time and enhanced creative freedom, enabling a wider range of unique video effects - all of which, until now, have only been available from video editing systems costing tens of thousands of dollars more.
The DC2000 is equipped with a real-time mixer, making it
possible to mix and output, according to the specifications of an effect, two
videos that are simultaneously being played back from the hard disk. This
method is especially useful for crossfades and dissolves, since these
consist of two chronologically overlapping videos. Real-time playback
occurs via either the analogue or digital ports of the card.
TitleDeko always creates titles in the same resolution setting
as the Premiere setting. Titles never have to be recompressed
which means they are always crisp on the edges and the soft
edges stay soft.
The SpiceRack images come in three sizes for easy use in
television, multimedia, and Internet based video productions.
Any image can become an effect in an Adobe Premiere
project by selecting them in the Gradient wipe tool of
Premiere.

Why to edit with IPP and deliver with IBP
MPEG-2 video has gained considerable attention for its reputation of storing digital video of very
high quality at considerably low data rates. This is accomplished through a technological
innovation in digital video compression that looks at full frames and partial frames of video data to
produce full bandwidth signals. MPEG-2 video efficiency has created such innovations as digital
video streaming, CD-ROM video distribution and DVD.
When working with MPEG-2 video there are basically three forms of compression that can be
used. These are I frame only, IPP, and IBP.
I-Frame only MPEG-2 is older MPEG-2 technology that does not take advantage of true MPEG-2 efficient compression techniques. For every frame of video from the source material a frame of compressed video is created and stored on the
hard disk. This is known as "intra" frame compression where every frame is basically the same size. It is similar to
the older M-JPEG format in its high data rate and large hard disk storage requirements for storing high quality video.

IPP MPEG-2 video delivers a true data rate advantage for high quality digital video and storage. IPP is made up of a set of frames or "group of pictures" (GOP). The GOP consists of one I frame and is followed by a series of predictive or "P" frames. The P frames are the secret to the low data rate. Each P frame stores only that part of the video frame that has changed
from the previous frame. This allows broadcast video quality at data rates 50% more efficient than I-Frame only making is the
best MPEG-2 format for professional video editing.

color ITU.R 601 specification for broadcast quality.
IBP MPEG-2 video is the preferred format for video streaming. It is an even more highly compressed format of MPEG-2 that consists of very long GOPs made up of I frames, P frames and complex Backwards looking frames known as "B" frames.
B frames fill in frame spaces between I frames and P frames by looking backwards from the P frame to the I frame. This format can not be edited frame accurately easily and would take so long to decode for editing that it would be an
