Commotion is a professional effects program ideal for digital video editors who want to move
beyond the basic layering tools found in non-linear editing systems. With familiar tools for
cloning and touch-up, texture and stylized media brushes, matte creation, DV preview, and
real-time playback, Commotion enhances any production.
What is Commotion?
If you have seen a movie or have watched television in the last few years, chances are
you have already seen some of the work done with Commotion.
Commotion is a software application for doing visual effects, and animation and is
being used around the world by professionals and prosumers to create special
effects for feature films, commercials, TV shows, corporate videos and other moving-image
presentations.
Commotion can be used for a variety of tasks, such as: compositing, animation, rod/wire removal, bluescreening, rotoscoping, video restoration, creating transitions, and much, much more.
As a desktop solution, Commotion broke new ground as the first to provide real-time playback from memory (RAM), b-spline rotosplines, painting on fields, and multiple rotosplines. It was the first application to include an option for adding motion blur to roto mattes.
Commotion combines the power
of the paintbrush with intuitive
compositing and effects tools to
deliver breakthrough performance and
control on the desktop. Commotion is just what you need for all of
your motion graphics, video effects,
digital cinema, and web streaming
media projects.
By Artists for Artists
Commotion is designed by
award-winning special effects artists
and leading film makers. We provide
you with smart tools that are
easy-to-use and deliver the ultimate experience and
control. Real-time brushes, interactive Rub-Text,
instant feedback, and advanced integration provide
you with the control you need.
Standout Performance
Commotion stands alone in combining leading paint
and effects technology with full- featured advanced
compositing tools, and is the only desktop application
to offer instant playback of moving video, DTV,
HDTV, and film images directly from RAM or disk,
using the exclusive SuperCache technology.
Commotion speeds up your workflow and delivers a
superior environment for creative work.
A Complete Package
Commotion delivers more: the most powerful
rotoscoping tools, the fastest image tracking system
for fixing shaky shots or handling match moves, a 3rd
generation paint system written from the ground up
to ensure quality retouching, and a host of
easy-to-use filters for superior keying, cleaning up
composites, and adding text and other effects.
Commotion is what you need to turn your
vision into reality.
Check out Videoguys' exclusive interview with Colin Sharpe, product manager for Commotion. He gives us some excellent insight into what's new with Commotion 4 and why it is one of our favorite new products of the year!!! Videoguy : Good to see you again Colin, you gave me a great demonstration of Commotion DV and I instantly fell in love with it. Commotion was the first video compositing software that was easy enough for me to use and master. Now you've just released version 4.0 and it is even easier to use and much more powerful. You must be very excited, Commotion 4 is a killer upgrade. Give us a quick look at what's new in 4 Colin: Faster, Better and More Powerful. Commotion 4 has been greatly improved over previous versions by becoming a faster product, an easier to use product with a new timeline interface and grouping controls as well as more powerful product bringing new features including Photoshop layer import and time-remapping functionalities. |
Nested Comps via Grouping Controls in the Timeline
Grouping provides a comprehensive solution for managing composites and
working with multiple layers at once. You can now add mattes, color corrections,
or other filters and motion controls to multiple layers at once all within an
easy-to-use folder interface. Groups can be viewed solo in the timeline to more
efficiently use screen real estate.
Adobe Photoshop Layer Import
Import Photoshop files into a composite while preserving the individual layer
information including transfer modes, transparencies, masks, and names. This
new feature further strengthens the integration and complementary nature of
Photoshop and Commotion, allowing you to start with stills and further refine
your work with animated paint strokes in Commotion.
New Player Interface
Final Cut Pro users and other video editors will feel at home with the new player
interface. The new player controls appear at the bottom of each clip and
composite windows and include a new flexible scrub control, support for drop and
non-drop time code, direct entry of time code or frame numbers and interactive
in/out controls.
New Timeline Browser Interface
The browser gives you an overview of the composite stack showing selection
state, letting you easily change the current view to look at the composite,
groups, or individual layers. This speeds up the animation and preview process
immensely.
New Time Remapping Features – (Commotion Pro 4.0 only)
Time remapping gives you the ability to time stretch a clip to provide slow or
fast motion output. In addition, each layer has a powerful control that allows
you full control over timing changes with the curve editor.
New Effects Palette Capabilities
The Effects Palette can now contain any individual parameter. This lets you view
custom effects controls, individual parameters from an effect, or an individual
transform parameter. This lets you focus on the animation of just critical
parameters without the clutter of a complicated timeline.
New Layer Import and Export Commands
You can now selectively import and export layers from a composite. This gives
you the ability to store templates of keyframes or common elements or combine
layers or groups from several projects into one composite.
Filters
New Color Curve or arbitrary gamma correction for RGB images with a custom
curve editing and drawing interface.
Mac OS X Support
Pinnacle Systems and the Commotion team are committed to OS X. However,
the initial release of the product will not run as a native application on OS X. We
are waiting for certain drivers and features to be released on OS X to enable the
same features that customers enjoy OS 8.6 and later. We plan to offer a public
beta soon to provide customers with the opportunity to test out the product
and give us feedback on the OS X release of Commotion 4.
