Review: The VidiU Live Streaming Device From Teradek

doddleme byHeath McKnight

Teradek’s VidiU is a small device that allows you to do live stream broadcasts, in high definition, with only your camera and an internet connection, either 3G/4G, WiFi or wired. And it works great, all without needing a computer, and it’s easy to use.

The VidiU is small and light, and extremely portable. The instructions are simple and easy-to-follow. I’ve used other, similar devices, and it seems like you need an advanced degree to get it to work. It’s as simple as plugging in your camera via HDMI, setting up your internet connection via WiFi, Ethernet or a 3G/4G USB modem, connect to your live stream page and you’re ready to go. Also, the VidiU has a built-in battery, so once it’s charged, you’re even more portable, especially with a 3G/4G connection.

That’s exactly what we did with the VidiU, and we were broadcasting live within 10 minutes of first pulling the live stream device from the box and connecting it to our UStream account. I was anticipating a level of difficulty, but Teradek made it easy. The OLED screen is easy to navigate, and where you log into your live streaming account, connect to the internet and more.

You can stream live to UStream, Livestream, Dacast, Justin.tv, Brightcove and others. Since it’s small and very portable, as long as you have a WiFi, wired or 3G/4G internet connection, you’ll be able to go live anywhere. In fact, there is excellent built-in support for UStream and Livestream, and uses RTMP as its transport protocol. read more...
