I think we can safely say that the concept of a broadcast editing suite in a bag was well and truly proven with the help of the MXO2. The progress of technology is amazing and I’m sure the novelty value of being able to turn up at a broadcast job with just a computer bag will disappear as it becomes the norm. This box really does change things again. Once it was bigger, better. Now it is smaller, faster, cheaper. For a piece of broadcast equipment, this thing is small, light and cheap. Read More

As an editor and motion graphic artist, I love plug-ins, and every once in a while (sometimes a long while) a plug-in pack comes along that either pushes the bounds of what we know a program can do, or it takes an existing idea and improves on it. Boris Continuum Complete 6 AE has done both of those. Let's find out how they have done it, and why you are going to want to either upgrade, or get this pack to add to your collection. Read More

The best part of the MXO2 is the price. I can’t think of another portable or desktop unit that delivers what it does for $1,595. There are more expensive options in the marketplace, and if you need real-time HD ProRes 4:2:2 capture in the field, the MXO2 may not be for you. But it meets my needs, not just in terms of price and features but, most importantly, in terms of its quality, stability and dependability. Read More

Last year I wrote a review of various software-based waveform/vectorscopes. In that review I included my praise and criticism of Adobe OnLocation, though technically it’s a lot more than just simple wave/vector software. Read More

"Looking ahead, I can see BCC 6 being on people's 'Top 10 of 2009' list, as Boris has taken the one problem with After Effects (not 'real 3D'), and has given us real 3D text with complete camera and lighting support, and has taken something that works exceptionally well in Boris Blue, Deformers, and added those as well. These, combined with all of the other great effects in the package, make it something that shouldn't be overlooked." Read More

This has been a long time coming. Last year at NAB Avid invited me to look at the new version of Media Composer, 3.0. I got to see all the new features like mixed format editing, the great new time code burn window, faster response time on the timeline, additional native formats like P2 and AVCIntra, added support for Vista and Leopard, new hardware (MojoDX and NitrisDX)...the whole gambit. I was quite impressed. Read More

I just received three Sima SL-20LX led lights. This are some very cheap LED lights for use on camcorders. There are no barndoors, no filterholders and you can't dim the light. But they are cheap and weight next to nothing. They work on a internal battery wich seems to last somewhere between 45 and 60 minutes, after that they need a 4 hours charge. That's the main reason i ordered 3. Read More

Recently, I had the opportunity in Boston to do something I had never done before: a “Non-linear editing shootout!” I agreed to do it with some trepidation because such things can be skewed or slanted. My concern was that this thing be thought out with objectivity because the simple fact is that unless the format is laid out properly, chances are one NLE will stand out from the others and no one will get the benefit of seeing what an individual product can do.Suffice it to say that it turned out Read More
