Avid Media Composer is one of the oldest video-editing programs. It was cutting feature films when Premiere was looking at postage stamp-sized video and Final Cut wasn't even a gleam in the eye of Apple. So what can you do new with a program that's well into its teens? The answer: refine, refine, refine - and that's what Avid has done with Media Composer 3.5. Read More

Those of us who have been editing for a while, remember Avid becoming the “product we love and the company we hate,” starting around the new millennium. With two aggressive leadership changes in the last few years, those days appear to be over. With the release of V.3.5 of Media Composer and Symphony, the revamped company is showing that it really cares what we think again. Read More

Sony Vegas Pro 9 has emerged as an amazingly powerful and feature-rich NLE/DAW. It's hard to find fault when there's so much here to be happy about. That said, there was a major glitch (with titles) in the previous 9.0a release, but Sony Creative Software continues to be responsive to its users and fixed this bug in the latest 9.0b update. As the second part to my “kicking the tires” test of the new Avid Media Access architecture I wanted to try and understand how AMA works as part of Avid media management. In case this is your first time hearing about AMA, it’s a new way for Avid Media Composer (as well as Symphony and NewsCutter) to access tapeless media. Currently supporting XDCAM and P2 media, the software natively supports editing these formats with no rewrapping or transcoding. Read More
