File this post under “how in the hell did I not know MPEG Streamclip could do this!” This being take the URL of a YouTube video and convert it into a usable file. That is one of those tasks that has come up time and time again and I’ve often struggled with how to make it happen. I’m not sure how long MPEG Streamclip has had this function but I’m going to chalk it up to you learn something new every day. Read More

In general, the settings of a sequence should match those of the primary footage type in the sequence. Though Premiere Pro can mix footage of various types in a sequence and compensate for differences in characteristics, performance and quality are maximized when such conversions are avoided.

Scott was just finishing up a three week edit using Avid Media Composer. He enjoys longer-form projects like this one as he always find himself learning something new about the non-linear editing tool that he's using for that extended period of time. One of my go-to favorites is the Paint effect. A real-time, built-in effect, it's really a Swiss Army knife of useful tools that has often saved the shot -- and my butt in the process. Read More

Chris Marino from WideOpenCamera.com and I were wondering how I would get an edit to him for grading in AE out of Avid with out having to shell out $500 for the Automatic Duck plugin. We started exploring options and it turns out it's actually quite easy. The obvious route would be EDL but After Effects has no EDL import function. However, Premiere does. Once you use that to get your sequence in and you've relinked it just replace your sequence with an After Effects comp. I don't believe there's Read More

Adobe has introduced a new Warp Stabilizer with the CS5.5 upgrade to After Effects that automatically stabilises jittery hand-held footage. Although the ability to stabilise such footage has been with After Effects for a while, the Warp Stabilizer handles it automatically. Also, it’s far simpler than using Mocha to stabilise a shot. Now the only tweaking you have to do is adjusting the quality of the stabilisation. With DSLRs increasingly being used for video capture, the ability to stabilise qu Read More
