One of the biggest benefits of the Final Cut Studio bundle of applications, is that it truly replicates all the parts of most facility service offerings: edit (Final Cut Pro), audio editing/mixing (Soundtrack Pro), color grading (Color), motion graphics (Motion) and compression/web/authoring (Compressor, DVD Studio Pro). Apple has done this better than its competitors, making it easy to stay within the Apple/Final Cut ecosystem. Read More

One of the things I found so amazing about Avatar was the facial imagery of the cat people and the live actors. With 3D it was like you were right next to them. Sure the action scenes were intense, but it was the immersive effect of the lush planet and the creatures that made it such a powerful experience. Read More

Continuing on an article in the last Pro Video Coalition newsletter, The Basics of Avid Media Composer for a Final Cut Pro Editor, this article will look at a number of other functions and how they differ from Final Cut Pro to Media Composer. One of the main reasons why I’m writing these articles is that Avid offers a free, full-featured demo of Avid Media Composer 4 available for download. When I wrote the first piece that demo was only for 14 days. They have since upped the time for this trial Read More

Telling a riveting, end-of-the-world story can be challenging when there are over 1,400 visual effects wreaking apocalyptic chaos on screen. But for the editing team behind 2012, Media Composer® software helped them pre-visualize sequences and collaborate across two countries, from the production’s beginning to end, to craft the intricate storyline. Avid Media Composer is one of the oldest video-editing programs. It was cutting feature films when Premiere was looking at postage stamp-sized video and Final Cut wasn't even a gleam in the eye of Apple. So what can you do new with a program that's well into its teens? The answer: refine, refine, refine - and that's what Avid has done with Media Composer 3.5. Read More

Those of us who have been editing for a while, remember Avid becoming the “product we love and the company we hate,” starting around the new millennium. With two aggressive leadership changes in the last few years, those days appear to be over. With the release of V.3.5 of Media Composer and Symphony, the revamped company is showing that it really cares what we think again. Read More

In its hey-day, Media Composer dominated the NLE landscape — the big boys on the block, dictating features, methodology, and, especially, price. The fact that you had to buy Composer’s expensive hardware didn’t hurt their bottom line either. At the same time, they were expanding, acquiring and developing a diverse group: Softimage, Sibelius, Digidesign, and others… spreading themselves thinner. Read More

In the past year, Apple and Avid have broken new ground with very solid updates to their flagship editor applications. Apple with its introduction of the “new” Final Cut Studio, featuring Final Cut Pro 7 – and Avid, first with Media Composer 3.5 and now 4.0. Read More
