Here we are a couple of weeks past what is just slightly more than a rumor about the next version of Apple’s Final Cut Pro. Let’s call it FCPx as someone on Twitter stated and not FCP Awesome as was tweeted by another. I like FCPx for the mindless speculation. There has been more digital ink spilled over so little information concerning FCPx than pretty much anything besides the next great Canon DSLR or Obamacare. I’m about to add a bit more.

The power of modern desktop editing solutions is often in the aggregate of the parts and not just the core editing application. Apple Final Cut Studio and Adobe CS5 Production Premium (or Master Collection) are certainly recognized as software suites, but this is also true of Avid Media Composer, especially when you add the Production Studio bundle of third party software. Dedicated, all-in-one editing/compositing tools are primarily the domain of more expensive tools, like Avid DS, Autodesk Smo

For all the scientific discoveries we’ve made in the past few decades, it’s surprising how many mysteries there are still left to solve. What’s the smallest sub-atomic particle? What are the limits of the human brain? Are there parallel universes similar to ours and if so, how do we prove it? That’s why it’s no surprise that for video editors there is still so much debate over the seemingly age-old question of which editing software is best.

Ten years ago there were few options for professional non-linear editing. Avid had the lion’s share with their Media Composer and Film Composer products, and for the slightly lower budget there was Avid MCXpress (distinct from Xpress DV), then the rest of the market was split across products from Media 100, Sony and a few others. All were expensive, complicated and difficult to get.

Recently I was reading a blog post from director Robin Schmidt over at ww.elskid.com which got me curious. He was doing a comparison between MPEG Streamclip and rarevisions 5DtoRGB. I was using MPEG Streamclip for myself to convert my 5D footage. From the beginning I was always aware of the obvious gamma shift you get using MPEG Streamclip. I just started to convert to Proxy files for editing and reconnect to my original files.

We recommend using G-Speed Qs with Avid Media Composer, Adobe CS5, Apple Final Cut Studio, Sony Vegas Pro 9 and all our video editing solutions. For best results choose RAID-5 to combine outstanding throughput capable of mutiple streams of compressed HD footage with data protection. This means that should a drive fail, you won't lose any data or any work, and best of all you can continue editing!"

If you’ve read some of my past articles about RED, you know I’m not a huge fan of “native” editing using the camera raw files as source clips. I find that an offline/online workflow is still best for smoothly editing RED projects, yet it still retains access to the raw color data during the finishing process. Previously I discussed an easy workflow for Apple Final Cut Pro and Color users, but this isn’t the only solution. As you know, Avid Media Composer 5 and Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 have both in
