Hi everyone, Here's a technique I use to work offline and then online with my Canon H.264 files with Avid Media Composer 5.5 Starting at DNXHD36 and upconverting the sequence only to DNXHD175. Why? Better Mac/PC performance Saves you space (space costs right?) Speeds you up in the edit Read More

PluralEyes has really made a name for itself with editors as the DSLR workflows have been explored more and more. PluralEyes is a software solution that allows you to automatically sync up the separate audio and video files from, say, a 5D Mark II DSLR with an audio file from a handheld digital recorder, like the ZOOM. It would be redundant of me to, once again, emphasize just how important the quality of the audio is both when planning preproduction, when shooting, and in post production.

For those many who have begun much of their filming using the DSLR's which, aside from being great for the photo enthusiast, can produce some beautiful video footage, but to the user's dismay, the audio quality for any of the DSLRs that I have heard is quite dreadful. Fortunately there is software that can, with little Read More

In the past few years, a barrage of new video acquisition formats and recording methodologies have sprouted like mushrooms after the rain. The major shift has come in the form of tapeless, file-based acquisition that uses equipment that has its roots in the information technology industry.

As video post-production has scrambled to keep up, editors have been left with little choice than to become ersatz compression specialists and computer technologists. We all wear a few extra hats these days Read More

The Adobe application’s handling of DSLR and other card-based media is straightforward and quick, as it should be.

Let’s face it, a lot more editors, artists and animators have Premiere Pro loaded on the systems they use every day than are actually using it. And yet over the last few years—and in particular over the past year, since Adobe started demoing real-time playback of all kinds of files, including 4K RED .r3d source, in Premiere Pro on systems with CUDA-enabled nVidia cards—there’s Read More

Editing software manufacturers continue to expand features by adding native support for a variety of new camera codecs. EDIUS 6, the newest version of Grass Valley’s primary editing platform advances this endeavor.

EDIUS 6 is exclusively a Windows-based NLE, running under a wide range of configurations. I was able to test it on a new HP EliteBook 8740w with the Windows 7 64-bit Professional OS installed. This is a robust, top-of-the-line mobile workstation with more horsepower than most de Read More

Last week, I was fortunate enough to receive a visit from my good friends over at Marshall Electronics. They stopped by the studio to let me try out the brand new monitors they have been developing for greater ease of use with HDDSRL camera systems – The V-LCD56MD 5.6?, V-LCD70MD 7?, and V-LCD90MD 9? (pictured above). These monitors are going to be of great interest to HDDSLR users because of the combination of features they offer – some new and some we have seen on other Marshall products – bu Read More

The H4 remains one of the most flexible of the current crop of portable 24-bit recorders, but Zoom have found plenty of room for improvement — and, more importantly, they’ve used it.

Zoom’s H4 digital stereo recorder remains hugely popular and, despite a few reservations, is one of my favourites. With ‘combi’ jack/XLR inputs, 48V phantom power, a coincident stereo pair of mics onboard, and masses of extra functionality (from four-track mixing to guitar effects and a USB audio interface) it Read More

Recently Singular Software released DualEyes, which is a stand alone application that offers the same advanced automatic synchronization technology as PluralEyes but in my opinion, it simplifies the process even further. For my tests, I used a Canon 7D, recorded sound from a Samson Zoom H4N and imported my finished files into Adobe Premiere Pro. In terms of writing a “how-to” or creating illustrations on how to use DualEyes, it’s really not necessary. Read More

Quality audio is one part of the editing equation that no one should forget. And yet, too many do just that and put aside audio concerns until it is too late. For those filming with the newer DSLRs on the market that provide high quality HD video on top of their photo capabilities, the need for a good microphone or recording device like the Zoom H1 is mandatory.
