Videoguys NAB 2008 Report
The feelings around this year's NAB Show were of apprehension, tension and excitement. With the announcements that first Avid, and then Apple had pulled out of the show, no one was really quite sure what to expect. When we hit the show floor on Monday it was a bit disorienting. No longer was Avid the first booth you saw in the South Hall, and nowhere to be seen where all the folks scurrying around the Apple booth. Instead, the show had a more open and even flow to it. While the traffic was definitely down from prior years, the general mood was up, and the quality of the attendees was what counted most. The folks who came to NAB2008 came for business, and they knew what they were looking for - Improved HD workflows, higher performance, top quality products and as much bang for the buck as they could find. As you will see from our report - NAB2008 was not a disappoint.

Videoguys' DIY6: Quad Core System
Last spring we updated our DIY5 article to reflect the then latest round of Dual Core processors. Almost as soon as the article came out, we found ourselves bombarded with questions about Quad core CPUs. Back then you paid a pretty hefty premium for them, so we didn't feel it was necessary to build a DIY machine for Quad core. That pricing model held true until the end of last year, when Intel dropped the prices on their Quad core processors and made them just a slight premium over a Core 2 Duo. We knew what we had to do, and the plans for DIY6 where set in motion.

Before we get into the actual nuts & bolts of our DIY 6 machine, I think it is necessary to go over our findings for Quad vs. Dual core processors for NLE.

Videoguys.com Top 10 Products of 2007
It's hard to believe that it's that time again. I've been doing this for over 10 years now, I can remember the first Videoguys' Top 10 article that was published in 1996. Back then MotionJPEG capture cards were the only way we could get video into our computers, and that was no easy matter. The PCI bus was the new technology but IRQ problems, driver conflicts and storage bottlenecks were still the norm. For a walk down memory lane visit the Videoguys article archive.

Wow! How things have changed. Today we can edit HD video with an off the shelf computer and a FireWire port. Video editing products are stable, reliable and, most importantly, affordable. The level of sophistication and features found in today's video editing software and plug-ins are simply amazing.

Videoguys Guide: Everything you Need to Know to get Started in Video Editing
It's easier and less expensive than you think!!

Anyone and everyone can make video that they can share, but not all video is equal. If you want your videos to look better and be more enjoyable to watch, you need to edit them. Many folks getting started in video editing want to learn more about the various options they have to produce videos that look great and more. This article has been updated to provide you or your friends, family members, children or business associates the information they'll need to get started and do the job right. If you are already an experienced digital videographer, pass this along to the folks you know who are looking for a starting point.

Videoguys' Tips for Shooting Family/Home/holiday Video

If you’re like me, you shoot tons of video of your family. I’ve got hours and hours of videotape of my kids. Over the past 10 years I’ve learned a thing or two about getting the best possible footage. No matter how cool your NLE system is and how many awesome special effects you can add, the bottom line is this: The video is only as good as the video you shoot.

Now includes Videoguys HD Shooting Tips
This past year I purchased a Canon HV20 HD camcorder for myself. I absolutely love this camcorder. The HDV footage is spectacular. With the HDMI output I can plug it right into my Sharp Aquos 1080p HD LCD TV and immediately view the footage in all its HD glory. When it comes time to edit I just attach the camcorder to my NLE computer via FireWire, capture the HDV footage and then start editing. Adobe Premiere, Apple Final Cut Pro, Avid Xpress, Avid Liquid, Grass Valley Edius, and Sony Vegas all do a fantastic job with my footage.

One of the most important things I’ve learned over the past year is to modify the way I shoot to take full advantage of the HD technology. Here are a few of my most important tips.

Videoguys NAB 2007 Report Part 1 "A" is for Adobe, Apple, & Avid

This year’s NAB started for us on Saturday, April 14th, two days before the actual show opened! We spent our weekend attending dealer and user events for with our vendors. The advantage of these events is that you get to spend a good amount of time watching presentations about the road map and new products for each company. These meetings are very cool and they tend to set the tone for the coming week.  While Adobe, Avid and Apple all had very exciting news to share, we walked away realizing that while there was lots of sizzle, we had to dig a little bit deeper to find the steak. By the end of the show it was clear to us that our industry is at an interesting crossroads. read more...

Videoguys NAB 2007 Report Part 2 "B" is for Boards & More..
Plenty of New Hardware

One of the things I like best about NAB is the chance to see all the new hardware coming down the road for video editing and production. Over the past few years computers have become so powerful that we can edit DV footage extremely well with just software alone. With the move to HD the software can handle the footage, but it takes some extra hardware to get the job done right. This can be as simple as some additional storage, an I/O board or a hardware accelerator. At this years NAB there were some very exciting hardware developments. read more...

DIY 5 Update (04/07)- Build your own Dual Core computer for Digital Video

As NAB2007 rolls around this April, we want to take the time and offer a DIY update article for you. Our DIY 4 and 5 machines are still an excellent recipe to follow.  We still advise anyone planning on building a new machine (or having one built for them) to reference both these articles.  We looked over the configs from those two articles and tweaked them a little, and then we re-priced them to reflect the most current pricing on the web. We ended up with 4 models all told.

Videoguys DIY5 – Intel Core 2 Duo Strikes Back!
Intel regains the top spot for NLE workstations

This summer Intel began shipping their new Core 2 Dual CPUs (code name Conroe). I’d been watching and following the leaks and reports about the new Conroe chips for months. All my favorite hardware websites – Tom’s Hardware, ExtremeTech, Anandtech and many others were posting articles on the remarkable performance of these chips. I knew I had to have one. I would make my own personal dream machine, to use in my new home editing suite. I called my dream machine the Vaporizer, and I could not wait to get it built.

Overall we are seeing such great performance and responsiveness that there is no doubt in our minds this is the way to go for any and all NLE programs we sell!

http://www.videoguys.com/DIY5.html

DIY – GPU - Picking the right graphics card for your NLE workstation
One of the most often asked questions we get asked on our tech support and sales lines (as well as in emails, online forums and user groups) is what is the best graphics card for NLE. The answer is actually pretty simple, once you understand why. It all depends on the NLE software you plan on running, what kind of video work you do and if you are also going to be using any additional hardware in your system. DIY4 - Dual Core Face-Off AMD Athlon 64 X2 vs Intel Pentium D 900

Back in the end of 2005 we realized that our first two DIY projects had gotten pretty long in the tooth. While they were pretty cutting edge at the time, we were seeing some very new and exciting technologies breaking out. The most exciting was dual core processors.

The advantages of Dual Core processors for video editing are significant. The biggest is price / performance. Most video editing applications are written to take advantage of dual processors and hyperthreading, now with a single affordable chip, you can maximize this capability.

With a Dual-Core processor the installation and set up of our DIY4 machines was very easy. As you will see from this article, you can build a killer dual core workstation for under $2,000 that will give you outstanding performance for all your editing and encoding needs.

Videoguy Interview: Tim Wilson of Avid tells all about Avid Liquid 7

Tim Wilson is a long time friend of the Videoguys and the senior product-marketing manager at Avid for both the Avid Xpress family and the brand new Avid Liquid 7. In this interview Tim tells us why Avid management is so excited about Liquid and what makes it so special for digital videographers. Here is just a sample of what he has to say:

“Gary, you’ve been talking to me about Liquid for as long as I’ve known you, and some of the features you’ve been most excited about – thousands of real-time GPU-accelerated effects, background rendering, instant auto-save updated 30 times a second, 5.1 audio mixing, and DVD authoring directly from the editing timeline – are exactly the same ones that excite us at Avid”.

“Avid Liquid is unique: video, surround audio, DVD, and effects in one application. Not one application for each of those tasks – one application that does it all. Nobody else can say that."

“Who is Liquid designed for? Someone looking for cutting-edge technology wrapped in a single, cost-effective, easy-to-use application!”

Check out our interview with Tim and don’t miss the special offer we put together for you when you purchase Avid Liquid today!

Videoguy goes to Avid Summer Camp 2005 (July '05)

  • Tiger in the tank! That’s right – we saw it first hand - Avid Xpress Pro running on the new Mac OS!
  • HDV and more! We also had the chance to see Xpress Pro HD with HDV running. I’ve said this before in previous articles and posts – when you combine native HDV support with Avid DNxHD CODEC, wonderful things happen. Avid was demonstrating a timeline made up of mixed HD and SD content, DV, uncompressed SD, HDV at 720p and 1080i and additional HD footage using DNxHD compressed files.
  • The Xpress Pro Advantage - You know, when you sell so many different NLEs and you have so many different flavors of each to support, it’s easy to forget some of the core features that really set Avid editing apart from the competition.  I’d like to take the time now to re-iterate some of these features that are found only in Avid Xpress Pro & Pro HD. Check out Videoguys' Sneak Peak review of the amazing new Avid Xpress Studio Complete!! (June '04)
Yesterday was the most exciting day we've had in our demo/eval room since we finished building and testing our $1,000 DIY challenge machine in January. We had the privilege of an on site, in depth demonstration of the new Avid Xpress Studio Complete by one of Avid's best demo guys - Glen Seaman. We were blown away. The first and most important thing that stands out about this new offering from Avid is the integration. This isn't a collection of software and hardware thrown together to be sold as a bundle, it is a wonderfully integrated package that provides you with EVERYTHING you need to create professional video, audio, and DVDs. The Videoguys' Challenge - DIY - Build your own computer for Digital Video (Feb '04)
Videoguy's hands on guide to building your own NLE computer We get asked all the time what is the best computer for Digital Video editing & DVD production. This is not an easy question to answer. We've had good success recommending Dell & HP workstations to our customers, but more and more we're getting asked a more specific question. Folks don't want to buy a computer, they want to build one themselves.

What is the Videoguys' Challenge? Simple. I asked our top tech support guy Jon to build me the best and fastest WinXP machine he could for $1,000. Then I had him install all of the latest Digital Video hardware and software on it. Once he was done I tested it for two weeks to see how it stacks up.

How did Jon do? Were we able to hit our budget? What components did we use? What did we learn along the way? The answers are all here in this article! Now you can follow along with what we did as a guide for Doing It Yourself!!

2006 was a transitional year for digital videographers. While we had several very new and exciting products, they were more evolutionary then revolutionary. In fact, my most revolutionary new product of the year isn’t even a video product. It’s the new Intel Core 2 Duo dual-core CPUs. With the introduction of these new CPUs, in both Apple and Windows computers, we are now getting an incredible level of CPU power and performance at very reasonable prices. With them we can take video editing and production to the next level - and that level is High Definition.

Videoguys Top 10 Products of 2005
2005 has been a very good year for Digital Videographers. We had some really magnificent new software, hardware and production tools come out that have all had a significant impact on producing video.

We've seen a bunch of new HD camcorders finally start shipping, and the NLE software guys are right on target with support for all of the new formats. In 2006 we anticipate Sony, Canon, Panasonic & JVC will be shipping several different HD camcorders each. Perhaps we’ll also see a couple of new vendors roll out HD cams as well.

Videoguys Top 10 products of 2004
This past year will go down as the year that HDV emerged. Back in April, at NAB, attendees got their first glance at the future - Sony's HDV camcorder. It was on display in a glass case and it wasn't actually working, but it generated a ton of excitement. Almost all of the leading NLE companies began talking about planned support for this exciting *new* format – which technically wasn't even new. JVC had been selling an HDV cam for almost a year, but most everyone in the industry viewed it as more of a novelty rather than an emerging technology. When Sony entered the game, the stakes changed for everyone.

Videoguys' Top 10 Products of 2003
2003 was a landmark year for digital video editing. It will go down as the turning point that marks the changeover from hardware to software based NLE solutions. These new NLEs leverage the power and performance of your computer, as well as additional hardware. This is no small wave of change. It is actually a tidal wave that is as important as the DV Tsunami that revolutionized video editing in the beginning of the decade. December 2003

Videoguys' Top 10 Products of 2002

Unlike the previous 2 shows, this year we saw a bunch of exciting new products that will be shipping within the next few months! That’s right folks, we’ve finally turned a big corner. Videoguys' NAB2004 Report (Part I-4) (May '04)
The big buzz at this year's NAB was High Definition TV (HDTV), in all its glorious flavors.
Many folks don't realize that not all HD signals are created equal, and not all televisions that claim to be HD have the same quality images.Even more confusing is how we are going to edit these various formats, what compressions (if any) we will use, and finally, what media we will use to output our finished productions. For this there is no clear answer yet. One new format did emerge that we feel will eventually replace DV as the format of choice for prosumer videographers. That format is HDV, but it is still not "here". Read all about the new technology & products introduced at NAB2004
