ADS Tech Scores a Triple Play with Instant DVD Family
ADS Tech is now shipping a complete family of USB Instant DVD products designed to meet the needs of a broad range of users. DVD Xpress, Instant DVD 2.0 and Instant DVD +DV are external Plug-and-Play devices that enable users to bring audio and video into a desktop or laptop PC for editing and burning to a CD or DVD that can be shared or archived. With a product line that spans from the most basic video capture solution to one of the industry's most complete consumer video production solutions, consumers also have a growth path to the future. How can you get good video quality through USB….I thought you needed FireWire for that?
All the video compression takes place in the Instant DVD device so when the video comes through the USB port it is already compressed in the format you desire such as MPEG-1 for VCD (Video on CD) or MPEG-2 for DVD (Digital Versatile Disc). The Instant DVD includes a hardware codec (encoder/decoder) so the video is compressed in real time as DVD quality or VCD quality video (depending upon your selection) and sent down the USB cable to your Mac.
The DVD videos you rent or buy are usually recorded at between 4 and 6 Mb/sec. (Megabits) and Instant DVD for Mac can capture audio and video at up to 6 Mb/sec. This means that we can capture video via a regular USB port in true broadcast resolution (720 x 480 NTSC/ 720 x 576 (PAL) in DVD quality. You’ll be amazed when you see the video quality of the DVD disks you’ll be producing!
What is the difference between DV and MPEG-2 video?
DV is a video format that generally is recorded by Digital camcorders. The connection on a Mac to capture DV from a digital camcorder or other device is FireWire (1394). DV is a compressed video format, but the video is compressed much less than other formats and produces very high quality results. The video compression takes place in the camcorder.
MPEG-2 video is a compression format that is commonly used for DVD disks but is also for the compression format for Satellite TV, Digital Cable and even HDTV. MPEG-2 video offers very high compression while retaining excellent quality. As you will see below, MPEG-2 video files are much smaller than DV files.
Video Bit Rates:
DV =3.6 MB/Sec.
MPEG-2 = 4, 5 or 6 Mb/sec.
1 Hour of DV = 13.3 GB
1 Hour of MPEG-2 @ 4 Mb/sec. = 2.0 GB
Many software programs such as IDVD will convert or transcode DV into MPEG-2, but this transcoding process can take a long time, tying up your computer resources for hours.
If your goal is to produce a DVD disk the fastest and easiest way is to capture directly into the proper DVD format (MPEG-2) so you can quickly, capture, author and burn your DVD. USB Instant DVD for Mac, helps you achieve your goal by capturing in the proper format to author and burn DVD or VCD disks.
Can’t I create a DVD movie with iMovie or with a FireWire connection and Digital camcorder?
While it is true that you can easily connect a Digital camcorder to your Mac to capture and edit DV video it is not so easy to convert that DV video into MPEG-1 for VCD orMPEG-2 for a DVD disk unless you purchased a G4 or iMac that came with a SuperDrive. iMovie allows you to export the edited video back to a Digital Camcorder or save as a Quick Time movie, but not as an MPEG-2 file.
If your G4 or iMac did not come with a SuperDrive pre-installed, you don’t have the iDVD software to compress DV into MPEG video and author DVD’s. In this case your only alternative to convert DV into MPEG- video is to purchase DVD Studio Pro from Apple for $995, or purchase Instant DVD for Mac.
I purchased an iMac with a SuperDrive and I have iDVD, why would I want Instant DVD for Mac?
Instant DVD allows you to capture any video content, from any video source, directly into the VCD or DVD format in real time. iMovie and iDVD work with DV video content ONLY. This DV video is very large and must be transcoded or converted into MPEG video. This transcoding process takes lots of time and hard drive space.
Instant DVD saves time because you don’t need to convert from one format to another such as DV to MPEG-2.
iDVD allows the import of DV files only. Most of us have video content on VHS tapes or 8 mm tape from our old camcorder. It’s pretty difficult and time consuming to get this old video content into your digital camcorder. And…once you capture as a DV file, iDVD has to convert the DV content (3.6 MB/sec. – MegaByte) into MPEG-2 (3,4,6 Mb/sec. – Megabit) and this takes a very long time.
What else do I need to Author and Burn a DVD disk?
DVD Burning: You will need a DVD burner. With Instant DVD you can install a SuperDrive (Pioneer A04) into your G4 but with Instant DVD you have the flexibility of adding an external DVD-R drive in a FireWire enclosure and you can even use an HP DVD+R drive in an external FireWire enclosure because CaptyDVD can recognize and external FireWire DVD burner.
VCD Burning: CaptyDVD includes a DVD burning engine, but not a CD burning engine. You can author your VCD content in CaptyDVD, but then to burn the actually VCD disk, we recommend using the latest version of Roxio’s Toast Platinum. This CD/VCD burning software offers the widest support and compatibility of CD-R/RW drives.
