This past year will go down as the year that HDV emerged. Back in April, at NAB, attendees got their first glance at the future - Sony's HDV camcorder. The big buzz at this year’s NAB was High Definition TV (HDTV), in all its glorious flavors. 2003 was a landmark year for digital video editing. It will go down as the turning point that marks the changeover from hardware to software based NLE solutions. Videoguys' NAB2003 report - It's all about the software!!
Make no mistake about it – NAB2003 clearly marks a turning point in our industry. The days of complicated installations and hardware compatibility issues for digital video editing are over. Over the past several years the West Coast DV Expo has become a very important show. All of the major players in the industry are there, showing off their latest and greatest new products. The timing of the West Coast show is late fall or early winter, making it kind of a mid way point between NAB shows. DV Expo has become one of the more important shows in the industry. It's a great opportunity for end users to get the chance to see the current landscape of digital videography. You can sit in any of the major vendors presentation theatres and watch slick product demos complete with bad jokes and free T-shirts. Then mosey on over to the Sony, Canon, Panasonic & JVC booths and check out the latest generation of camcorders. While the show had good attendance, the crowds were not that bad. This year (Y2K, 2000, the new millenium) was a breakthrough year for digital videographers. New products were introduced that gave an unprecedented level of value, power and performance for non-linear editing. 1999 was the best year yet for amazing new desk top video products. In 1999 DV became the dominant format for DTV. Of the 12 hardware products featured in this article, ten are DV and the remaining two have DV options.
As 1999 came to a close two new very hot technologies have emerged: affordable Real-time dual stream editing and MPEG2 compression. ( Read More)

At the DV Expo major new products were introduced for desktop video editing. Unfortunately not all the products mentioned in this article are shipping. The Canopus Rex RT & DPS Velocity 2D are now shipping. Hopefully by Thanksgiving they will all be readily available. In addition to seeing them at the show, I had the chance to play with all these hot new products in private demo sessions and beta tests. ( Read More)

The DV Expo (Oct 13-16, Pasadena CA) was a very informative and exciting show. I strongly recommend that digital videographers and content creators put the '99 DV Expo in their plans. The seminars and conferences were well done and the presenters were both knowledgeable and interesting to watch. The exposition was extremely focused and the atmosphere on the floor was electric! 1997 has been a fantastic year for new DTV products. I have been using, testing and reviewing DTV products for almost 2 years now. I can’t believe how far we’ve come in such a short time. Back when my son Max was born in August 1995, the top video capture cards cost almost a thousand dollars and were struggling to deliver 30 frames per second, ¼ screen video. 2 years later and we can capture super Hi resolution DV video directly to our hard drives via FireWire or add full speed, full screen vide ( Read More)

This was a banner year for new and exciting video editing gear. Computers and video are starting to merge. The power of silicon chips and software genius is making an incredible impact on video production. All of the products I have chosen this year use digital technology.
