Videoguys' NAB2003 report - It's all about the software!!

DV Expo has become one of the more important shows in the industry. It's a great opportunity for end users to get the chance to see the current landscape of digital videography. You can sit in any of the major vendors presentation theatres and watch slick product demos complete with bad jokes and free T-shirts. Then mosey on over to the Sony, Canon, Panasonic & JVC booths and check out the latest generation of camcorders. While the show had good attendance, the crowds were not that bad. Over the past several years the West Coast DV Expo has become a very important show. All of the major players in the industry are there, showing off their latest and greatest new products. The timing of the West Coast show is late fall or early winter, making it kind of a mid way point between NAB shows. It's a great way to get a feel for the direction the industry is going and what the companies have in store for the next year. ( Read More)

Much like 2001 this year started out pretty slow for new products. With the exception of the Pinnacle Studio Deluxe, not much was happening. Then along came the DV Expo East show in NYC this June. Suddenly a plethora of innovative new releases hit the market. As the summer went along, several more new products were introduced. ( Read More)

2001 started out as a pretty slow year for new products and technology. At NAB we got a glimpse at what the year would have to offer. I am happy to report that 2001 will go down as one of the most important ever. The main reason for this is the birth of a new technology – affordable DVD authoring. ( Read More)

This years NAB was a bit smaller and less exciting then last years. But looking back at it, much or last years NAB hype was the same internet bubble that burst last fall. At NAB2000 everywhere you looked there was video streaming technology. Well guess what? A year later, broadband access is still very limited and although we have the technology to create great looking streaming video, few of us have the bandwidth to watch it. ( Read More)

This year (Y2K, 2000, the new millenium) was a breakthrough year for digital videographers. New products were introduced that gave an unprecedented level of value, power and performance for non-linear editing. 1999 was the best year yet for amazing new desk top video products. In 1999 DV became the dominant format for DTV. Of the 12 hardware products featured in this article, ten are DV and the remaining two have DV options.
As 1999 came to a close two new very hot technologies have emerged: affordable Real-time dual stream editing and MPEG2 compression. ( Read More)

At the DV Expo major new products were introduced for desktop video editing. Unfortunately not all the products mentioned in this article are shipping. The Canopus Rex RT & DPS Velocity 2D are now shipping. Hopefully by Thanksgiving they will all be readily available. In addition to seeing them at the show, I had the chance to play with all these hot new products in private demo sessions and beta tests. ( Read More)

1998 was a banner year for revolutionary new desk top video editing products. Not only are the 12 products on this list (two ties) outstanding, but each one pushed the envelope of the current technology and has left an indelible mark on the timeline of digital video editing. The DV Expo (Oct 13-16, Pasadena CA) was a very informative and exciting show. I strongly recommend that digital videographers and content creators put the '99 DV Expo in their plans. The seminars and conferences were well done and the presenters were both knowledgeable and interesting to watch. The exposition was extremely focused and the atmosphere on the floor was electric! Ironically, our industry appears to be following the same growth pattern as the city of high rollers. A few years ago Las Vegas wanted to be more consumer oriented and broader, while today the growth is clearly upwards and more high end. The same can be said for Desk Top Video Editing. Over the past few years we have seen an explosion in affordable, yet powerful hardware and software that brought non linear editing to the masses.
