At the DV Expo major new products were introduced for desktop video editing. Unfortunately not all the products mentioned in this article are shipping. The Canopus Rex RT & DPS Velocity 2D are now shipping. Hopefully by Thanksgiving they will all be readily available. In addition to seeing them at the show, I had the chance to play with all these hot new products in private demo sessions and beta tests. (

1998 was a banner year for revolutionary new desk top video editing products. Not only are the 12 products on this list (two ties) outstanding, but each one pushed the envelope of the current technology and has left an indelible mark on the timeline of digital video editing. The DV Expo (Oct 13-16, Pasadena CA) was a very informative and exciting show. I strongly recommend that digital videographers and content creators put the '99 DV Expo in their plans. The seminars and conferences were well done and the presenters were both knowledgeable and interesting to watch. The exposition was extremely focused and the atmosphere on the floor was electric! Ironically, our industry appears to be following the same growth pattern as the city of high rollers. A few years ago Las Vegas wanted to be more consumer oriented and broader, while today the growth is clearly upwards and more high end. The same can be said for Desk Top Video Editing. 1997 has been a fantastic year for new DTV products. I have been using, testing and reviewing DTV products for almost 2 years now. I can’t believe how far we’ve come in such a short time.
