2011: The Year of the X
That's "X" as in FCPX and XGrades (crossgrades)

2011 has been quite a year for Videoguys, and our industry. In April, at the FCPUG SuperMeet during the NAB show in Vegas, things changed dramatically when Apple gave a first look of their new FCPX editing software. I was at the event, and the room was filled with excitement, energy and anticipation - that is until after the Apple presentation. The professional editors and broadcasters in the room left f (Read More)

Thunderbolt is a new, high-speed, dual-protocol I/O technology designed by Intel and introduced by Apple that delivers amazing performance, with ease & simplicity. It makes attaching Thunderbolt enabled storage and I/O cards a breeze. All of the current Apple iMacs, MacBook Pros, MacBook Airs and Mac Minis have Thunderbolt. Today’s iMacs with Thunderbolt no longer have the drawback of limited upgradeability. They are easily expandable and support video capture and output as well as professional (Read More)

It's easier and less expensive than you think!! When we began publishing this article over 5 years ago, the world of video was much more limited. DV Camcorders were over a thousand bucks (analog VHS and Hi8/8mm cams had just hit the under $500 level) and although you could shoot in several formats, the end result was almost always the same - producing a VHS tape that you could watch. Affordable DVD burners had just hit the market and we were in the middle of a format war. Web video was limited (Read More)

We get asked all the time, "What computer system should I use for Video Editing?" So, we created this page to give you some basic guidelines. Every month computers get more powerful and less expensive, so the recommendations on this page could become outdated very quickly. 2010 was one of those years that I think we will look back at as a key turning point in our industry. While HD camcorders have been around for 5 years, it was in 2010 that we hit the tipping point that made HD editing a reality for everyone. Many professional videographers migrated to HD years ago with an HDV camcorder that delivered great looking footage. The resolution was there, but the camcorders lacked the optics and focal controls, and flexibility, to make your video look like something sh (Read More)

Event Videography is one of the most challenging and rewarding areas of digital videography. It can also be very profitable - if you do it right! You need to make sure your lighting is good, your audio is coming through loud and clear and most importantly, that you have plenty of power avail (Read More)
