2006 was a transitional year for digital videographers. While we had several very new and exciting products, they were more evolutionary then revolutionary. In fact, my most revolutionary new product of the year isn’t even a video product. It’s the new Intel Core 2 Duo dual-core CPUs. With the introduction of these new CPUs, in both Apple and Windows computers, we are now getting an incredible level of CPU power and performance at very reasonable prices. With them we can take video editing and p ( Read More)

This year’s NAB show was very different from the last couple of years. Unlike the previous 2 shows, this year we saw a bunch of exciting new products that will be shipping within the next few months! That’s right folks, we’ve finally turned a big corner. We didn’t spend time looking at products we may sell in the future, we spent our time seeing products that our customers will be able to buy and use almost immediately. ( Read More)

2005 has been a very good year for Digital Videographers. We had some really magnificent new software, hardware and production tools come out that have all had a significant impact on producing video.
We've seen a bunch of new HD camcorders finally start shipping, and the NLE software guys are right on target with support for all of the new formats. In 2006 we anticipate Sony, Canon, Panasonic & JVC will be shipping several different HD camcorders each. Perhaps we’ll also see a couple of new ( Read More)

The big buzz at this year’s NAB was High Definition TV (HDTV), in all its glorious flavors. Many folks don’t realize that not all HD signals are created equal, and not all televisions that claim to be HD have the same quality images. There are two key variables in understanding HD image quality. The first is the lines of resolution. This is pretty straightforward; the more lines of resolution, the more detailed the image. The next variable is the type of scanning used. Interlaced scan is what we ( Read More)

DV Expo has become one of the more important shows in the industry. It's a great opportunity for end users to get the chance to see the current landscape of digital videography. You can sit in any of the major vendors presentation theatres and watch slick product demos complete with bad jokes and free T-shirts. Then mosey on over to the Sony, Canon, Panasonic & JVC booths and check out the latest generation of camcorders. While the show had good attendance, the crowds were not that bad. Later in ( Read More)

2001 started out as a pretty slow year for new products and technology. At NAB we got a glimpse at what the year would have to offer. I am happy to report that 2001 will go down as one of the most important ever. The main reason for this is the birth of a new technology – affordable DVD authoring. ( Read More)

1998 was a banner year for revolutionary new desk top video editing products. Not only are the 12 products on this list (two ties) outstanding, but each one pushed the envelope of the current technology and has left an indelible mark on the timeline of digital video editing. Unlike last year's top ten list I have actually ranked this years winners. This ranking is totally my own, based not only on how much I liked the products, but how easily they were to set up and install and how much of an im ( Read More)

1997 has been a fantastic year for new DTV products. I have been using, testing and reviewing DTV products for almost 2 years now. I can’t believe how far we’ve come in such a short time. Back when my son Max was born in August 1995, the top video capture cards cost almost a thousand dollars and were struggling to deliver 30 frames per second, ¼ screen video. 2 years later and we can capture super Hi resolution DV video directly to our hard drives via FireWire or add full speed, full screen vide ( Read More)
