At NAB Sony had Vegas 9 featured prominently in it's own special pod adjacent o the gigantic Sony booth in the back of the South Hall. This was a big change form prior years when Sony Vegas was tucked away in a single pod at the Sony booth or located in it's own small booth nowhere near the main Sony booth. The feelings around this year's NAB Show were of apprehension, tension and excitement. With the announcements that first Avid, and then Apple had pulled out of the show, no one was really quite sure what to expect. When we hit the show floor on Monday it was a bit disorienting. This year’s NAB show was very different from the last couple of years. Unlike the previous 2 shows, this year we saw a bunch of exciting new products that will be shipping within the next few months! That’s right folks, we’ve finally turned a big corner. This year's NAB was a very exciting show. At last year's show we got our first glimpse of HDV and the HD revolution. At this year's show HDV was everywhere – including several new professional HD camcorders that sell for well under $10,000!! ( Read More)

This past year will go down as the year that HDV emerged. Back in April, at NAB, attendees got their first glance at the future - Sony's HDV camcorder. It was on display in a glass case and it wasn't actually working, but it generated a ton of excitement. Almost all of the leading NLE companies began talking about planned support for this exciting *new* format – which technically wasn't even new. The big buzz at this year’s NAB was High Definition TV (HDTV), in all its glorious flavors. Many folks don’t realize that not all HD signals are created equal, and not all televisions that claim to be HD have the same quality images. Much like 2001 this year started out pretty slow for new products. With the exception of the Pinnacle Studio Deluxe, not much was happening. Then along came the DV Expo East show in NYC this June. 1999 was the best year yet for amazing new desk top video products. In 1999 DV became the dominant format for DTV. Of the 12 hardware products featured in this article, ten are DV and the remaining two have DV options.

1997 has been a fantastic year for new DTV products. I have been using, testing and reviewing DTV products for almost 2 years now. I can’t believe how far we’ve come in such a short time. Back when my son Max was born in August 1995, the top video capture cards cost almost a thousand dollars and were struggling to deliver 30 frames per second, ¼ screen video. 2 years later and we can capture super Hi resolution DV video directly to our hard drives via FireWire or add full speed, full screen vide ( Read More)
