For the past number of years I have been working on a Mac Pro, with two 23" Apple Cinema Displays, running Legacy versions of FCP. I had added a Matrox MXO box, which went between my monitor card and my second ACD to provide Broadcast Monitoring so that I could view my video output. Hitting the Command F-12 keys would toggle the second monitor between a standard Mac Desktop and a Broadcast Monitor. Matrox debuted Matrox MicroQuad, a four channel SDI-to-MDMI multi-viewer for $995 and an adapter to expand the Mac workspace for $179. If you’ve been following along the past few months, you know we’re testing a very nice Dell Workstation as we plan the immediate future of our company and what computers might replace all the Mac Pros we currently run. Since we’re an Adobe / Avid centric shop now, the Dell shows us how we might work in a cross platform world.

Working as a one-person team, a staff member from MSNBC.COM offices in NY or Washington, shoots, produces, and edits video in the field. Each producer is equipped with a Mac laptop loaded with Avid Media Composer 5.5 editing software, connected to a Matrox MXO2 Mini MAX I/O box with built-in Thunderbolt connectivity. This software update adds broadcast monitoring support with the recent Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3 update.
