Those of us who have been editing for a while, remember Avid becoming the “product we love and the company we hate,” starting around the new millennium. With two aggressive leadership changes in the last few years, those days appear to be over. Sony Vegas Pro 9 has emerged as an amazingly powerful and feature-rich NLE/DAW. It's hard to find fault when there's so much here to be happy about. That said, there was a major glitch (with titles) in the previous 9.0a release, but Sony Creative Software continues to be responsive to its users and fixed this bug in the latest 9.0b update. NAB is often the launching point of many new products and this year is no different. At NAB, Sony brings a new version of Vegas to the table adding many new features. Vegas Pro 9 comes with many welcome new features,
higher resolution, more effects, wider format support,

As the second part to my “kicking the tires” test of the new Avid Media Access architecture I wanted to try and understand how AMA works as part of Avid media management. In case this is your first time hearing about AMA, it’s a new way for Avid Media Composer (as well as Symphony and NewsCutter) to access tapeless media. Currently supporting XDCAM and P2 media, the software natively supports editing these formats with no rewrapping or transcoding. ( Read More)

When Avid announced Media Composer 3.5 and the new Avid Media Access architecture the first thing I wondered was how would this new way of importing and using media would work when it comes to one of Avid’s strongest features: Media Management. When you designate an Avid media drive the app creates a folder on that drive (either an OMFI Folder or Avid Media Files folder) and all media captured or imported into the software resides in that directory, on that drive. Avid is releasing Media Composer 3.5 today (with parallel updates to Symphony and Newscutter). It’s a big release and should have something for everybody.
Here’s an overview, based on an Avid conference call, Friday. There are some revolutionary changes, and some more pedestrian improvements, as well.

That brings us to Avid Media Composer 3.5. I haven’t played with this new version of Avid Media Composer 3.5. I’m just looking at the specs and press release and discussion on this update it but from that it appears that it will combine both the revolutionary new feature along with some big evolutionary steps forward.
