Avid listens to their customers.
A few years ago Avid did something unprecedented in our industry that many editors may have forgotten about. They took their show on the road. It wasn't actually a road show as much as it was a chance for their top management to visit with post-houses, professional editors, indie film makers and user groups. They asked what Avid needed to fix and when they asked for honest feedback, they sure got it! What did Avid do with this information? They used (Read More)

Avid recently released a faster and more powerful Media Composer with Avid Media Composer 5.5. With this latest new release I was anxious to get my hands on this latest iteration, and thanks to the good people at Avid they made that a reality. (Read More)

A powerful editing program that is the industry leader, with a media management system that invites extensive collaboration. This is a professional program that savvy video editors should aspire to learn, but beginners to nonlinear editing will be seriously challenged.

Avid's founder, Bill Warner, literally wrote the book on nonlinear editing - when he figured out how to take video taped footage and copy it to digital hard disks, allowing video editors to use computers for random access edit (Read More)

Avid Agility is my new book, covering all things Media Composer, including new features in Media Composer 5. It represents a large fraction of what I know about the system, learned over a period of nearly two decades, during which time I worked closely with the folks at Avid, helped my peers become fluent with the system, taught hundreds of editing students, ran a magazine about editing, and in general, got neck deep in all things Media Composer. Two years in the making, it’s designed to appeal (Read More)

I can say without reservation that Avid Media Composer 5 is an upgrade that truly deserves the “Hot” rating from our product review ranking index. Media Composer has been one of the top nonlinear editors since the existence of NLEs. In fact, it pretty much jump-stared the whole NLE revolution. Version 5 contains a ton of new features (several quite earth-shattering, if you’re a longtime Avid editor) that answered many previous customer requests and complaints. (Read More)

Once again Avid have jumped ahead of Apple with their new updated Media Composer 5. Avid are looking to steal back some FCP editors with their new updated editing software. CS5 Premiere Pro is also tempting FCP users so my advice for Apple is “GET YOU FINGER OUT” ! (Read More)

There are clear indications that this update resulted from reorganizing, rewriting and modernizing major portions of the underlying code.

At first glance, the user interface may appear to have changed little from previous versions of Media Composer. However, a closer examination reveals the addition of some new tools, and updated functionality in older ones. The new “Smart Tool” pane in the Timeline window is the most obvious addition. In it sit the segment and trim overwrite/ insert mode to (Read More)

I’ve been an Avid editor for the past 11 years and Media Composer is the only edit system I use on a day to day basis. Being an editor for a full service production company, one day I’m cutting a sizzle reel for a pilot episode for a TV program, the next a 30 second commercial spot, and a few days after that it could be a 30 minute educational video. There is a wide spectrum on content that I’m creating and Media Composer always gets me where I’m going, without me ever having to worry about my (Read More)

Okay, let’s get one thing out of the way first: the new Drap and Drop timeline in Avid Media Composer 5.0 isn’t a direct rip-off of Final Cut Pro’s timeline. Nor will an FCP editor sit down in front of MC5 and instantly be able to rip into the timeline via mousing in the same way they do with FCP. Nor will an Avid editor sit down in front of MC5 for the first time, turn on the new Smart Tool, and instantly have their editing world changed. Avid’s implementation of the open, Drag and Drop timelin (Read More)

Avid is on a roll in 2010, highlighted by the purchase of Euphonix and the release of Media Composer version 5, its signature creative editing application. The company has been on an accelerated development pace for the Media Composer/NewsCutter/Symphony editing family, with recent releases adding such innovative features as AMA (Avid Media Access), Stereo 3D editing tools and Frame Rate Mix and Match. New features in version 5 (approximately the seventeenth generation of Media Composer) encompa (Read More)

OK, I am NOT going to say that Avid Media Composer 5.0 is a “game changer.” Mainly because I hate that term. And I don’t think that it is changing the editing game. But, what it is doing is adding more tools to make it a better application. Hmmm…well, I might actually have to change my thoughts on the term “game changer,” because it is actually changing the game, just not the game you all are thinking about. The game Avid is changing is the one it has been playing with it’s user base. (Read More)
