Editing software manufacturers continue to expand features by adding native support for a variety of new camera codecs. EDIUS 6, the newest version of Grass Valley’s primary editing platform advances this endeavor.
EDIUS 6 is exclusively a Windows-based NLE, running under a wide range of configurations. I was able to test it on a new HP EliteBook 8740w with the Windows 7 64-bit Professional OS installed. This is a robust, top-of-the-line mobile workstation with more horsepower than most de (Read More)

2010 will go down as a landmark year for helping level the playing field between studio and independent filmmakers. Like in ’09, 2010 was again dominated by HD DSLRs. Although the Canon 5D Mark II made its debut back in ’08, it still continues to transform the production industry in new exciting ways and is now the camera of choice for the majority of indie filmmakers. Even on the pro-level, HD DSLRs have gone on to shoot major TV spots, music videos, network shows and feature films with A-list ( Read More)

Well we are now in to 2011 so it’s time to look back at 2010 and some of the products that became available. Last year my award went to the excellent Convergent Designs NanoFlash. As with last year there is no real meaning to the award, it’s just an excuse for me to highlight my favourite product from 2010. ( Read More)

“Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 and the other components of Creative Suite 5 preserve all the 4K quality and the rich color the RED camera delivers so the footage is gorgeous. Just two years ago, this type of high-end, tapeless workflow wasn’t possible — and it has completely transformed what is possible for filmmakers working with limited budgets.”

I can say without reservation that Avid Media Composer 5 is an upgrade that truly deserves the “Hot” rating from our product review ranking index. Media Composer has been one of the top nonlinear editors since the existence of NLEs. In fact, it pretty much jump-stared the whole NLE revolution. Version 5 contains a ton of new features (several quite earth-shattering, if you’re a longtime Avid editor) that answered many previous customer requests and complaints. ( Read More)

If you’ve read some of my past articles about RED, you know I’m not a huge fan of “native” editing using the camera raw files as source clips. I find that an offline/online workflow is still best for smoothly editing RED projects, yet it still retains access to the raw color data during the finishing process. Previously I discussed an easy workflow for Apple Final Cut Pro and Color users, but this isn’t the only solution. As you know, Avid Media Composer 5 and Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 have both in ( Read More)

It was only a few years ago that Avid, trying to win back the hearts and minds of customers who were abandoning them and going to Final Cut and other systems, adopted the motto: “We’re Listening.” With the release of Media Composer 5, it’s obvious they did.
One of the most anticipated releases in years, Avid’s re-realized Media Composer 5 is among the most robust, feature-laden and dynamic packages from the company in over a decade. It’s taken that long (some say even longer) for Avid to ste (Read More)

Avid is on a roll in 2010, highlighted by the purchase of Euphonix and the release of Media Composer version 5, its signature creative editing application. The company has been on an accelerated development pace for the Media Composer/NewsCutter/Symphony editing family, with recent releases adding such innovative features as AMA (Avid Media Access), Stereo 3D editing tools and Frame Rate Mix and Match. New features in version 5 (approximately the seventeenth generation of Media Composer) encompa ( Read More)

Adobe is shipping its much-anticipated Creative Suite 5.
The big story is native 64-bit operation for all of the applications, which requires a 64-bit OS (Windows Vista/7 or Mac OS X "Snow Leopard") running on a processor that supports 64-bit operation. The upside of thi (Read More)

RED's Jim Jannard has hit out at DSLR shooters, saying they should be 'embarrassed' to be shooting 1080p on line-skipping sensors.
Canon and Panasonic have a closed and secretive approach to business, whilst RED speak quite candidly. Canon need to take that secretive approach whereas RED, being on their 'island' in a digital cinema niche don't need to worry about much and they can take a more swashbuckling cavalier approach. That I like. But some of the things they say… well, not really co (Read More)

Avid’s newest version of their flagship NLE, Media Composer, hits the shelfs in June 10 and I’ve had the opportunity to give it a test drive over the last week or so. In some ways Media Composer 5 marks a very substantial change for Avid in how it deals with media, and some of it’s new features could be seen as very direct responses to long-standing criticisms by Final Cut Pro editors… ( Read More)
