The sheer mix and volume of formats to deal with today can be mind-boggling. Videotape player/recorders – formerly a common denominator – are a vanishing breed. Post facilities still own and use VTRs, but operations at the local market level, especially in broadcast, are becoming increasingly tapeless. Clearly, once the current crop of installed VTRs become a maintenance headache or are no longer an important cog in the operation, they won’t be replaced with another shiny new mechanical videotap (Read More)

Sony Creative Software introduced Production Assistant for Vegas Pro as a way to streamline post-production, and I have to say, it's a terrific plug-in, created along with VASST. As a Final Cut Pro editor, I take a different look at the software, and I also discuss Vegas Pro version 9. (Read More)

Sony Vegas Pro 9 has emerged as an amazingly powerful and feature-rich NLE/DAW. It's hard to find fault when there's so much here to be happy about. That said, there was a major glitch (with titles) in the previous 9.0a release, but Sony Creative Software continues to be responsive to its users and fixed this bug in the latest 9.0b update. In this article, CreativeCOW's Jim Harvey takes a look the new release of Vegas Pro 9 and determines ...This is one of the most comprehensive editing suites out there and certainly the most comprehensive version of VEGAS to be released. The question that I get most from users is “Is it worth it for me to upgrade from PRO 8 to PRO 9? My answer is a qualified Yes. I can say this right up front: Vegas Pro 9 addresses some long-standing issues raised in the Vegas user community. It also steps out in front of the pack of other NLEs with cutting-edge features and support for the newest formats. To me, the biggest advantages of this release are the total support of 64-bit technology and 4K acquisition and editing. (Read More)

Certainly for this immediate point in time, it's very difficult not to see Vegas 9 as, frankly, the most simply effective RED editing solution currently on the market for small to moderate sized projects. Fast, efficient, flexible and totally unified into a single piece of software that costs less than $1000. Time will tell if Vegas handles longer projects just as well but if ever there was a time for FCP, Avid and Premiere editors and indy filmmakers to sit up and take notice of Vegas, it's now (Read More)

There are really quite a number of features and improvements that make up Premiere Pro 4.1, but the biggest thing for me is the little fixes that are never talked about. Premiere Pro 4.1 is faster and more responsive and at the end of the day, that's always a huge plus for myself. (Read More)

Welcome back to our presentation of how HP’s new Intel Nehalem-based workstations compare to older workstations when rendering from Adobe Creative Suite 4 (CS4).
