Let’s start this review off by dispelling a long-held rumor. I’m a PC guy, just always have been, and after reviewing just about every PC NLE at least once, I have settled on Adobe Premiere Pro (and the CS 5.5 suite) as my editor of choice. Not too long ago, I had a freelance client that absolutely insisted on Apple ProRes files for the output of a project. Unfortunately, Apple does not allow PCs to write ProRes files, and at the time PC’s couldn’t read them either.

Fast-forward a few mon (Read More)

It’s taken me a while to finish this review as I’ve been pretty busy. While preparing it I posted various frame grabs that I pulled from the Samurai and the Gemini on a couple of blogs and forums and these have created a bit of a stir that was never intended. Anyway, what about the Samurai? Well to be honest I was impressed before I had even turned it on. When you buy a Samurai, not only do you get a neat little video recorder, but you also get a flight case full of everything you need to use (Read More)

A few weeks ago, i bought the Sony FS100 and an Atomos Ninja Pro Res recorder. I decided on the Ninja after months of reading up, testing and research. One of the first things i did was update the software to Version 2...this gives you full quality playback which is vital in the field. (Read More)

If Workflow is the Answer, then it’s one hell of a Question…! For a very long time post production workflow has been built upon consistencies - consistent delivery, consistent format, consistent platforms, consistent tools, consistent viewing environments. But then along came a veritable tsunami of digital detritus that washed ashore - in a very short span of time - a greater diversity of tools, formats, platforms and systems that all previous years put together. With the radical change going on right now in the world of Final Cut Pro, I’ve had some FCP7 users ask me about maintaining an end-to-end ProRes workflow in Premiere Pro. There are questions whether it’s even possible. Well, I’m here to show you it IS possible, and how to make it go.

What do I mean by an “end-to-end ProRes workflow”? This means ingesting ProRes clips, dropping them right to the timeline, rendering previews when necessary to a new ProRes file, and outputting back to a ProRe (Read More)

Industry infatuation with Apple’s ProRes continues to build, from ARRI’s adoption of ProRes for its Alexa digital cinema camera to AJA’s unveiling at IBC last September of its latest ProRes field recorder, the Ki Pro Mini.

AJA's latest acquisition solution is a winner.

AJA is now shipping the Ki Pro Mini, a major step forward in the company’s line of direct-from-camera acquisition products. First came the I/O HD, a product I reviewed at its introduction some four years ago. At that point, its ability to transcode any input into ProRes was revolutionary but I remarked what was needed was some way to make it portable and record on the fly. Well, two years later came the KiPro, a product which remains a hot item. (Read More)

AJA started shipping its first ProRes-based video recorder, the Ki Pro, in the fall of 2009. Recording via HD-SDI in ProRes was impressive, but the Ki Pro was too big and heavy to be useful for much in-the-field work. Now AJA has shrunk the Ki Pro down to a fraction of the original’s size, added some features, taken a few away, and dropped the price in half. Viola, you have the new Ki Pro Mini. (Read More)

Like a miniature version of the original KiPro from AJA (which I reviewed in October 2009), the KiPro Mini performs many of the same functions (although not all of them) in a fraction of the space —and at a fraction of the cost— and is designed to dock onto the back of many professional camcorders, while it makes a higher quality recording than that is possible internally with most of them. With a flood of other 4:2:2 dockable recorders reaching the market (and one that existed previously which (Read More)

AJA’s Ki Pro Mini is one of those must-have units in your camera bag. Few products offer such diverse functionality in such a bite-size form factor. You get great quality and good value with a unit that integrates nicely into any Final Cut (Apple ProRes) editing pipeline. The unit will appeal to the seasoned veteran and indie market. (Read More)
