For editors, there’s good news and bad news concerning camera manufacturers. The good news is that a stream of innovative, impressive and technologically amazing new cameras are being rolled out that shoot fantastic new formats for independent filmmakers, DPs and directors of all kinds. Knowing both systems is VERY important in today’s post production market. Don’t be labelled as an “FCP Editor” or “Avid Editor.” Just be known as simply, an editor. You need to be known as someone who can use either tool, because that will make you far more marketable. ( Read More)

Continuing on an article in the last Pro Video Coalition newsletter, The Basics of Avid Media Composer for a Final Cut Pro Editor, this article will look at a number of other functions and how they differ from Final Cut Pro to Media Composer. Avid Media Composer is one of the oldest video-editing programs. It was cutting feature films when Premiere was looking at postage stamp-sized video and Final Cut wasn't even a gleam in the eye of Apple. Those of us who have been editing for a while, remember Avid becoming the “product we love and the company we hate,” starting around the new millennium. With two aggressive leadership changes in the last few years, those days appear to be over. In its hey-day, Media Composer dominated the NLE landscape — the big boys on the block, dictating features, methodology, and, especially, price. The fact that you had to buy Composer’s expensive hardware didn’t hurt their bottom line either.
At the same time, they were expanding, acquiring and developing a diverse group: Softimage, Sibelius, Digidesign, and others… spreading themselves thinner. ( Read More)
