Avid is currently (until June 15, 2012) running a special upgrade/crossgrade promo on Avid Symphony. You can crossgrade your Final Cut Pro (V7 or before) or upgrade your old Avid (Xpress Pro, Xpress DV or Media Composer) license to a brand new Symphony v6.0 license for a meagre US$995. That is a $5,000 discount on the full price, and $2,500 discount on the Avid Media Composer crossgrade price. ( Read More)

Why should YOU upgrade your video editing system
and what is the best upgrade for you?
There are several reasons to upgrade your video editing system. Like most technological advances, the video editing systems available today are faster, more stable, easier to use, and capable of higher-quality then some of those made as recently as six-months ago!

2011: The Year of the X
That's "X" as in FCPX and XGrades (crossgrades)
2011 has been quite a year for Videoguys, and our industry. In April, at the FCPUG SuperMeet during the NAB show in Vegas, things changed dramatically when Apple gave a first look of their new FCPX editing software. I was at the event, and the room was filled with excitement, energy and anticipation - that is until after the Apple presentation. The professional editors and broadcasters in the room left f (Read More)

6 months later, and the "discussion" of FCPX has still not quieted down. A recent ep of "That Post Show", as well as a post by Philip Hodgetts, has thrown some fuel into the fire. I was going to post on Philips post, but that has already turned into a god awful mess. ( Read More)

So, if you follow my friends like @JokeandBiagio on Twitter, you’ve figured out that we started out in Hollywood making docs and television shows - basically (and literally) in our apartments.
We used Final Cut Pro and we used it like crazy. Had Final Cut Pro not existed I wouldn’t have been able to do so many things that I’ve gotten to do. I am grateful. ( Read More)

We get asked all the time about what laptops we recommend for video editing. This is a more difficult question to answer, because unlike a desktop, you are very limited in what upgrades and changes you can make after you buy it. So we are not going to recommend any specific models, but rather what brands of laptops we recommend and the model family they fit into. Before we get into the Laptops, lets talk about the specs we look for:

If Adobe Premiere, Avid Pinnacle Studio, MAGIX Movie Edit Pro, Sony Vegas and similar fare define the entry-level sector of the market, then the high end is probably dominated—with apologies to Apple's Final Cut Studio—by Avid Media Composer, which is the NLE of choice for a large number of film and video projects. And with the recent introduction of Media Composer 5.5, Avid has wrapped into the product a number of new features and functions of direct relevance to the HDVP community. ( Read More)

It’s official. Today, after 15 years, OneRiver Media officially purchased our first licensed seat of Avid Media Composer. This was actually a long time coming, as we’re constantly in situations where Final Cut Pro 7 has limitations in how we work in the timeline. And don’t get me wrong; we’re not completely jumping ship from Final Cut Pro. We still have several projects that are in Final Cut Pro 7 right now, and may even continue to use Final Cut Pro 7 until we get solid hardware migration worki ( Read More)

PluralEyes has really made a name for itself with editors as the DSLR workflows have been explored more and more. PluralEyes is a software solution that allows you to automatically sync up the separate audio and video files from, say, a 5D Mark II DSLR with an audio file from a handheld digital recorder, like the ZOOM. I thought it appropriate to combine both products in one review as both are based on the powerful Nexidia phonetic search engine and are tools that will essentially change the way we edit. Nexidia, by the way, is well-known in the IT industry for its work in developing phonetic search technologies.
Being on two different editing platforms, the software offerings are not exactly competitors as much as siblings... in rivalry. (Read More)

We just found this gem on the Avid user forums!
I've created a three-part tutorial on Blu-ray burning with Avid Media Composer, Sorenson Squeeze, and Avid DVD by Sonic.
It covers the following parts:
How to export from an Avid HD project (in Avid Media Composer)
How to use Sorenson Squeeze for creating Blu-ray files
How to burn to Blu-ray using Avid DVD

I made this post on one of the many listservs I participate in. I thought it would be good to share on our blog as well.
One of the things I found so amazing about Avatar was the facial imagery of the cat people and the live actors. With 3D it was like you were right next to them. Sure the action scenes were intense, but it was the immersive effect of the lush planet and the creatures that made it such a powerful experience.
