I’ve been an Avid editor for the past 11 years and Media Composer is the only edit system I use on a day to day basis. Being an editor for a full service production company, one day I’m cutting a sizzle reel for a pilot episode for a TV program, the next a 30 second commercial spot, and a few days after that it could be a 30 minute educational video. There is a wide spectrum on content that I’m creating and Media Composer always gets me where I’m going, without me ever having to worry about my (Read More)

I recently acquired a Matrox MXO2 Mini to use on my system. Mainly for use with the new Avid Media Composer 5.0 for monitoring, but I got the MAX version to help speed up H.264 encoding. I do a LOT of that for client approvals. Yes, I still have the big boy, the MXO2. But when I boot to my Avid partition, I swap a couple cables (control cable and HDMI) to my MXO2 Mini. To have access to Compressor on my Avid partition, and to have access to a few FCP codecs like DVCPRO HD, XDCAM EX and HDV, (Read More)

When I ask you who the main NLE players are, most people mention Media Composer and Final Cut Pro right off the bat, with Premiere Pro and Vegas taking up the rear, and in the last few years, I think that Avid has really taken a beating from Final Cut Pro. (Read More)

Post Magazine has posted three articles by Jon Moser about Avid Media Composer 5 and it's impact on the industry. I was very happy to be a part of his research. Jon and I exchanged emails and phone calls while he was working on the article. We talked about the waves MC5 was making in the Final Cut Pro community as well as the importance of new features like AMA ProRes, Quicktime and DSLR support. We aslo discussed the impact of opening up Media Composer to 3rd party hardware for monitoring HD. T (Read More)

Now, once you hit play, there is no lag, no stuttering just crystal clear HD video playing in sync with your timeline. I really don't know what else I can say. The MXO2 mini was awesome, and the unit worked like a charm, and now with support for Adobe's CS5 , as well as Final Cut Studio (Final Cut Pro and Color), this unit is one that any editor working in HD that doesn't have a way to monitor their footage on an external source NEEDS to check out. I couldn't find one performance problem wit (Read More)

There is a great thread going on over at the Creative Cow about the Matrox MAX technology. Highly respected industry experts have all chimed in and the answer is clear. THEY LOVE THE MXO2 and the MAX encoding technology!!

What great thread. MAX is the secret ingredient that gives the Matrox MXO2 family of products a leg up on other excellent I/O devices such as the Kona. As was mentioned here, if you have a Kona card, keep on using it! You can add the CompressHD card to your Mac Pro and get (Read More)
