Our camera crews typically would record to tape or FireStore drives using our Canon HV20/HV40, Sony PMW-EX1, and Panasonic HPX500 camcorders. Many of our ProVideo Coalition readers already know that Matrox’s MXO2 family now includes four members, especially since I have covered them quite recently in my Direct DreamColor interfaces article. However, fewer of our readers may remember the original MXO device from Matrox, which is quite different from the MXO2 family members. Public beta releases of Matrox Axio.utils version 4.2 and Matrox Mx.tools version 4.2 are now available on our user forums. We are in the process of testing these drivers but would like to offer them to users in the meantime.

The MXO2 comes in several configurations: MXO2, MXO2 Rackmount, MXO2 LE and MXO2 Mini. All the MXO2 boxes essentially do the same thing, with the distinguishing factor being the inputs and outputs available. Each box provides for monitor calibration, up-convert, down-convert, cross-convert of video content, and optional accelerated encoding for H.264 using the Matrox Max technology. ( Read More)

I read a press release about a new product from Matrox called CompressHD, and I had a warm and fuzzy feeling all over. I contacted Matrox and asked them if it was possible to get a review unit and they were nice enough to send it out a week later. While it’s 4-5x the cost of the Turbo.264 USB key, (depending on which one you compare it to, the first SD key or the more recent HD version) it has some great benefits that make the cost worthwhile.
