As a whole, Media Composer 3.5 and now 4.0 are very healthy updates to this professional editing tool. It proves that even in challenging financial times, Avid is continuing to invest in its development effort. This gives experienced users a reason to stay with Media Composer and first time Avid editors a toolset that’s hard to resist. ( Read More)

Avid has continued on their path of regular, usable, functional updates for their popular editor Avid Media Composer. Last week at IBC Avid surprised many when they rolled out version 4.0. Is this version (to use a tired cliche when talking about software upgrades) a revolutionary upgrade or just an evolutionary update? I think it depends on who you ask or what your needs are.

Avid unveiled Media Composer version 4.0 today (press release). The headline feature is what Avid is calling Mix and Match — the ability to combine different frame rates in the timeline and play them without rendering. The demos I’ve seen are impressive. Inexpensive Consumer Video Editing programs like Pinnacle Studio, Adobe Premiere Elements, Sony Vegas Movie Studio, Apple iMovie, Windows MovieMaker are easy and fun to use. In fact, I think they are pretty amazing. While these products can be purchased for less then one hundred dollars they deliver a level of performance and features that would have cost 10 times as much just 5 years ago! The buzz around the Avid booth wasn't about new products, but rather a new corporate logo and identity. The new Avid logo uses shapes familiar to video editors to make the word AVID. I must admit that at first glance I liked the logo, but it took me a couple of double takes before I realized the shapes spelled out the word Avid.
