I’ll take a moment of of my day editing on an Avid to deal with something in the Final Cut Studio world. Specifically, Apple just released an update to the entire package today.
Pro Applications Update 2010-01 improves overall stability and addresses a number of other minor issues. This update is recommended for all users of Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Server, and Logic Studio. (Read More)

This month we'll look at the brand new speed controls in Final Cut Pro (FCP) 7. In Final Cut Pro 6 and earlier versions, the speed control function was called Time Remapping, but now it's just called Speed Change. It's also much easier and faster. We have four tools to work with: the Change Time window, the Speed Tool in the Timeline window, the Clip Keyframe control below each track in the Timeline window, and the Speed section of the Viewer window's Motion tab. We'll look briefly at each one a ( Read More)

We use Compressor for two different tasks; to encode files to make them smaller and change their codec to a delivery format for distribution, and to transcode source video to different codecs to improve or facilitate workflow.
In FCP we can work with a number of different video formats, including a large number of new HD formats. As the frame size and quality of our video goes up, so does the size of the video files. Faster Macs and falling prices for hard drive storage and ram means that we (Read More)

Apple chose to include several easy ways to integrate Blu-ray into the Final Cut Studio workflow. These options are both fast and easy, yet do offer controls over customization. I’d recommend considering adding a Blu-ray burner to your workstation to harness the full power of Final Cut Studio. ( Read More)

In the end, this is a healthy update with both small and large improvements. I’ve cherry-picked the most notable to talk about, but there are many more. Apple has lowered the base price to $999 or an upgrade at $299. If you already own an Intel Mac Pro or MacBook Pro and make your living using Final Cut Studio, then don’t think twice about moving up. With the economy in the dumps, you would think that companies would be raising the price of software to help offset revenue losses. Not Apple. They have LOWERED the price of Final Cut Studio 3 to a staggering $999 for the full version and $299 for the upgrade. Remember, users of Final Cut Pro, all the way back to version one can upgrade to Final Cut Studio for $299. That's awesome and really unbelievable. My hat is off to Apple for this very aggressive move to get the product in more users hands ( Read More)

Recently Apple rolled out Final Cut Studio 3, which updated Final Cut Pro to 7 and Compressor to 3.5. While this article is about Compressor 3.5, it is important to note that, in FCP 7, there is a new command, 'Send To Compressor', which replaces the previous 'Export Using Compressor' function. In the past, when we used 'Export Using Compressor', FCP handed off the video to Compressor one frame at a time, tying up FCP for the duration. This is no longer the case. As soon as you 'Send To Compress ( Read More)

About this time every 2 years Ken petitions me for my written musings on the latest features of the new Final Cut Pro. By now you've most likely read about all the money shot features such as the new Speed Tools, expanded ProRes family, iChat Theater, etc. My goal is not to regurgitate these features, but rather show you why it's the little improvements that often make the biggest wake in the editorial world's collective conscious. So if you please, below are my top ten most memorable and life-c ( Read More)
