"The Matrox MAX technology has revolutionized our workflow. Our camera crews typically would record to tape or FireStore drives using our Canon HV20/HV40, Sony PMW-EX1, and Panasonic HPX500 camcorders. They would then ship the tapes or drives back to our facility where staff would transfer the footage to Final Cut Server. It would take us a day just to see it, then another three or four hours to add all the metadata so the editors could get to work. Once the editing was done we would output from (Read More)

This month I’ll describe the round-trip procedures for moving active project files among the various apps in Final Cut Studio 2009. I’ll start in Final Cut Pro 7 and use the “Send To” command to go out to Soundtrack Pro 3 (STP), Motion 4, and Color 1.5. Then, I’ll explain the return trip to Final Cut Pro (FCP). (Read More)

As I followed Apples presentation on my favorite tech blogs, while watching folks reactions on Twitter (follow us) and Facebook (become a fan), I started thinking about how the iPad could impact content creation. Sure it’s a great delivery vehicle for video and multimedia, but could it be used to help us make content of the future? I’m 100% certain it could, but it may take a few generations of iPads to get there. So in an attempt to speed up the process, I’m putting out this wish list of applic (Read More)

Peter Wiggins posted a Top Ten Wish List for FCP in 2010 over on his blog recently. Then in a tweet he asked: What is yours? Years ago I posted what could have been called my FCP wish list in two Editblog posts: Bottom 10 Final Cut Pro ...tips? and Bottom 10 FCP Tips ... revisited. They read just like a Final Cut Pro wishlist. So with those in mind here’s my Wish List for Final Cut Pro in 2010. Some are revisited right from the Botton 10 FCP Tips, some echo Peter’s. Everyone who has used FCP for (Read More)

Before they know it their video has been seen a 100,000 times, a half-million, a MILLION and counting! Sisters Hannah and Hillary Hindi, who already had a large following with their "The Hillywood Show" on YouTube, becoming larger than they ever imagined with their "Twilight" parody (over 3 million views to date). One of the biggest benefits of the Final Cut Studio bundle of applications, is that it truly replicates all the parts of most facility service offerings: edit (Final Cut Pro), audio editing/mixing (Soundtrack Pro), color grading (Color), motion graphics (Motion) and compression/web/authoring (Compressor, DVD Studio Pro). Apple has done this better than its competitors, making it easy to stay within the Apple/Final Cut ecosystem. (Read More)

Continuing on an article in the last Pro Video Coalition newsletter, The Basics of Avid Media Composer for a Final Cut Pro Editor, this article will look at a number of other functions and how they differ from Final Cut Pro to Media Composer. One of the main reasons why I’m writing these articles is that Avid offers a free, full-featured demo of Avid Media Composer 4 available for download. When I wrote the first piece that demo was only for 14 days. They have since upped the time for this trial (Read More)

This month we'll look at the brand new speed controls in Final Cut Pro (FCP) 7. In Final Cut Pro 6 and earlier versions, the speed control function was called Time Remapping, but now it's just called Speed Change. It's also much easier and faster. We have four tools to work with: the Change Time window, the Speed Tool in the Timeline window, the Clip Keyframe control below each track in the Timeline window, and the Speed section of the Viewer window's Motion tab. We'll look briefly at each one a (Read More)

Since sometime in late 2008, Apple’s 17” and select 15” Macbook Pro models have included not one but two graphics processors, the nVidia 9400M and 9600M GT. It is my understanding that by default the laptop uses the integrated lower-wattage 9400M, which includes 256MB RAM and helps extend battery life. It will run the main laptop display and push an external display as well. The additional nVidia 9600M GT graphics option is actually a discrete internal PCI-E card featuring 512MB of RAM and offer (Read More)

The MXO2 comes in several configurations: MXO2, MXO2 Rackmount, MXO2 LE and MXO2 Mini. All the MXO2 boxes essentially do the same thing, with the distinguishing factor being the inputs and outputs available. Each box provides for monitor calibration, up-convert, down-convert, cross-convert of video content, and optional accelerated encoding for H.264 using the Matrox Max technology. (Read More)

We use Compressor for two different tasks; to encode files to make them smaller and change their codec to a delivery format for distribution, and to transcode source video to different codecs to improve or facilitate workflow.

In FCP we can work with a number of different video formats, including a large number of new HD formats. As the frame size and quality of our video goes up, so does the size of the video files. Faster Macs and falling prices for hard drive storage and ram means that we (Read More)
