It's hard to believe another year has gone by. I think 2009 was one of the most challenging years for our industry. The troubled US economy created budget problems for videographers, video editors and producers on every level. In today's economy every Penney counts and before we invest in new technology, we have to be sure of the benefits.

Continuing on an article in the last Pro Video Coalition newsletter, The Basics of Avid Media Composer for a Final Cut Pro Editor, this article will look at a number of other functions and how they differ from Final Cut Pro to Media Composer. This month we'll look at the brand new speed controls in Final Cut Pro (FCP) 7. In Final Cut Pro 6 and earlier versions, the speed control function was called Time Remapping, but now it's just called Speed Change. It's also much easier and faster. Since sometime in late 2008, Apple’s 17” and select 15” Macbook Pro models have included not one but two graphics processors, the nVidia 9400M and 9600M GT. It is my understanding that by default the laptop uses the integrated lower-wattage 9400M, which includes 256MB RAM and helps extend battery life. It will run the main laptop display and push an external display as well. The MXO2 comes in several configurations: MXO2, MXO2 Rackmount, MXO2 LE and MXO2 Mini. All the MXO2 boxes essentially do the same thing, with the distinguishing factor being the inputs and outputs available. Each box provides for monitor calibration, up-convert, down-convert, cross-convert of video content, and optional accelerated encoding for H.264 using the Matrox Max technology. ( Read More)

We use Compressor for two different tasks; to encode files to make them smaller and change their codec to a delivery format for distribution, and to transcode source video to different codecs to improve or facilitate workflow.
In FCP we can work with a number of different video formats, including a large number of new HD formats. As the frame size and quality of our video goes up, so does the size of the video files. Faster Macs and falling prices for hard drive storage and ram means that we (Read More)

You know those little post-it note pads that come in multiple colors? Ok, admit it now. Do you ever color-code your notes? Maybe yellow notes are financial, pink ones are hot to-do items. Well with Final Cut Pro 7, you can now use color to label your markers in a very similar way. There are several other marker improvements as well. ( Read More)
