Doug has been following the ‘NLE Wars’ with quite a bit of interest for some time now. Like many, folks who have been using FCP for years, including all of his own current work work, as well as a number of feature films in the past, He is very concerned about the end-of-life for FCP/FC Studio in the wake of the release of FCP X, and he's really, really, not motivated to switch to another platform. We've been very active over the past few months in LinkedIn group discussions. There are several really great groups with very knowledgable professionals participating. Last week Rich wrote about his decision to switch from FCP7 to a combination of Premiere Pro and Media Composer instead of FCP X. Since then, Adobe released Premiere Pro CS6 (along with all the other CS6 tools) and a number of people have published first looks or accounts of switching to the increasingly popular NLE. Adobe is making a big play for Final Cut Pro users with their CS6 release of Premiere Pro. It’s vastly improved over the Premiere Pro of old and is a lot like Final Cut Pro. There’s even a keyboard shortcut layout for Final Cut Pro users. But it is a totally different application than our old Final Cut friend and some things you’re used to in Final Cut Pro either aren’t there or just work differently. Philip learnt to edit tape to tape about 16 years ago at Sky News whist working as a News Cameraman. It made his camerawork SO much better. It was a great way to learn to edit. No “Apple Z”, you had to make hard decisions and stick with them. You also had to be FAST. ( Read More)

As a long-time Final Cut Pro user, David Lawrence has been looking for a new NLE, since FCPX isn't an option for his editing style and needs. Being a Final Cut Pro 7 editor converting to Premiere Pro I had a laundry list of things that I was hoping would be added to CS6, several of which I figured were no brainers in order to to fix up an editing program which was most of the way there but still had a ton of really odd and un-user friendly design choices. They say don’t knock it before you try it. And sure enough, until recently, I have been fairly open to the idea of adopting Final Cut Pro X as my NLE of choice. But I have just delivered my first project cut exclusively on FCP X and must say it was a completely unpleasant experience. "Everything just changed in post", is the tagline for FCP X on Apple's website. It sure did: for the first time in 9 years as a professional editor I actually didn’t enjoy editing. ( Read More)

The new (or renewed) interest in Avid Media Composer is being fueled by Apple’s launch of Final Cut Pro X last year and aided by Avid’s discounted cross-grade price. Many experienced FCP editors are now investigating the nuances of what seems like a completely foreign interface to some. Tutorial DVDs like Steve Hullfish’s Avid Media Composer for Final Cut Pro Users from Class on Demand is a great start. ( Read More)

Apple didn’t have a booth at the 2012 NAB show, and no one expected them to. Even though no one was surprised they weren’t there a lot of folks commented that they thought it would’ve been more appropriate than ever given that Apple now has a shipping version of Final Cut Pro X. But Apple’s presence was felt all over the show floor with tons of Apple products on display. They were even having on the record meetings off the show floor and I was lucky enough to be invited to one of them. ( Read More)

As I have covered in great detail in several prior articles here in ProVideo Coalition magazine, the most complete and most reliable method of connecting your critical video monitor to your computer based editing system is via a professional a/v i/o interface, like those Thunderbolt models now offered by AJA, Blackmagic, Matrox, and now even MOTU.
