No, this isn’t the 5D workflow article that you’ve been waiting for. That’s still coming in another couple of weeks. In the meantime, I’ve started on another Canon 5D commercial. This time I’m cutting the project in Avid Media Composer instead of Final Cut Pro. There are a number of reasons, including some recent stability issues I’ve had with FCP. People have been talking about the amazing video footage coming from new DSLR cameras, at resolutions that can easily exceed 4K digital cinema files, for a couple of years now, in all kinds of forums, including Cinematography, After Effects, and many NLE forums. The 7D has manual control, great function control, and can work with a variety of traditional lenses and accessories.
Canon is stepping up its prosumer DSLR game with an all-new camera line, and it all starts with the 7D. Sporting HD video in 1080/24p, 720/60p, and the 18 megapixel stills are also impressive, but the most attractive aspect is the huge assortment of Canon EF and EF-S lenses. (Read More)

Besides all the advantages and possibilities shooting with a HDSLR offers, there are some major drawbacks. For me the biggest problems are: rolling shutter (but even the red has it), no audio control and the too contrasty, over-compressed, 4:2:0 h264 output. If there is one technology which has stood out in 2009 it is the emergence of the DSLR as a viable filmmaking tool. Capable of capturing beautiful images with wonderful shallow depth of field; or extreme wide angle, with amazing low-light capability, the DSLRs technology has revolutionised what is possible to filmmakers who don't have large budgets to work with or film cameras or ultra high-end video technology.
