In this industry, you have to earn your stripes. Avid had to displace flat bed film editors. Apple had to get movies under its belt. With Adobe, it's been a different trajectory. If you look at motion graphics or visual effects, everyone thinks of After Effects and Photoshop, but Adobe has a different brand presence with Premiere Pro. Back when we first introduced Premiere Pro, there were of course some aspects that made editors happy, but other things related to how it worked or performance tha (Read More)

When Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5 was launched more than two years ago, the message was clear that Adobe was taking Premiere Pro into the professional market segment. This is not your father's Adobe Premiere, it is a powerful NLE designed to handle the most challenging professional projects. They were the first NLE developer to commit to an all new 64-bit architecture and native HD format support. Adobe harnessed all of the power in your computer, multiple CPU cores, huge amounts of RAM and even you (Read More)

Before coming to Adobe my preferred tool for editing was FCP. Premiere CS4 was installed as part of master collection. Back then every time I had to use it, I didn’t like it – It wasn’t better than FCP and it did things differently – so I ignored it.

Then jump ahead in time and I am interviewing for the job as AE product manager, and I was honest in my interviews of what I thought about Premiere when asked about it. Where they had me though? – I hadn’t even tried the latest version. (Read More)

Dynamic Linking and Project Communication in Adobe Creative Suite Written by DVi Contributors on June 15th, 2011 You have a project that required just Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Encore to make a DVD. It’s all set up with menus and buttons that match up with the Premiere Pro chapter markers, etc. and it works fine. But the client wants some changes… more sophisticated color grading, and motion graphics for the lower thirds. So, you open up this Premiere Pro project in After Effects and go t (Read More)

OK, if you have been following me for a while, you know that I use both Avid Media Composer and Final Cut Pro…and I am pretty proficient with both. If you haven’t been following me for a while… I use both Avid Media Composer and Final Cut Pro, and am pretty proficient with both. I am a fan of both. I might lean more towards FCP, because it better fits the way I like to edit. But I know that Avid had strengths in many areas that far surpass what FCP is capable of. Plus I started out on Avid MC. S (Read More)

We know from the way the world works that they ought to come in predictable waves. Every eighteen months we eagerly await them. Invariably powerful and potentially game changing, we're not talking about the Tibetan monsoons or the latest White House scandal. We’re referring to milestone releases from Adobe: Version 4, Version 5, version 6—uh, oh wait. I mean version 5.5. Hey! What's with the new incremental release? (Read More)

History tells us that the software industry does not evolve linearly. Instead it evolves with sudden bursts of disruption followed by a lengthy period of normalization followed by another burst of disruption. I think it’s fair to say that we are at the tail end of one of those cyclical bursts as it relates to how content is authored, but we are only at the beginning of a profound period of normalization as it relates to how content is delivered, consumed, and monetized. This round of disruption (Read More)

The Adobe application’s handling of DSLR and other card-based media is straightforward and quick, as it should be.

Let’s face it, a lot more editors, artists and animators have Premiere Pro loaded on the systems they use every day than are actually using it. And yet over the last few years—and in particular over the past year, since Adobe started demoing real-time playback of all kinds of files, including 4K RED .r3d source, in Premiere Pro on systems with CUDA-enabled nVidia cards—there’s (Read More)
