I was in New York City for a Samsung event focused on SSDs and gaming on PCs last month. There wasn’t much in the way of new information, but Samsung gave me one of their SATA III 256GB 830 SSDs to try out. These are within a few bytes per second of the fastest SATA3 SSDs money can buy, so I was pretty excited to get home and throw it in a Mac. ( Read More)

We're getting a lot of calls and questions about our latest DIY recommendations - and requests for a DIY9 build! We've also been participating in some very hot discussions an the Adobe and COW forums about this. I wanted to put this article together to give some insight into why we pick the components we do and what our overall DIY NLE workstation philosophy is.
The bottom line is this. You need a balanced system for best results. Too much of one area at the expense of another hurts perform (Read More)

Trying to quantify the GPU in a Premiere Pro…For the editing and pro community, it is a big deal. It is something that I’ve wanted to do for some time, but I had no idea how complicated and time consuming this would be!
I went into this endeavor thinking that I would clearly delineate between different Quadro level cards and along the way understand what each one offered in the way of performance. I was methodical in setting up my system and in trying to create real-world tests that would e ( Read More)

We love it when we hear that Videoguys' customers have been able to make good use of the information we provide. Here is one such story from Craig Mashburn at the Southwest Church of Christ in Amarillo, Texas who is using our DIY8 project as his guideline for a new editing workstation. Cris is the person responsible for the church's technology, audio and video and I am looking forward to reading his upcoming posts on how his system upgrade is going. ( Read More)

One of the biggest topics at NAB 2011 was the arrival of Thunderbolt, a new I/O technology that offers lightning fast data transfers when working with high-resolution displays and/or data devices through a single port and cable. At the present time, Thunderbolt is only available on the latest MacBook Pro (as well as the just announced iMac), which brings dual and quad Core processors and high performance graphics. Because of the simplicity and super speed of Thunderbolt, you’ll now be able to e ( Read More)

As you know Videoguys.com has been publishing DIY guides and system recommendation pages for years. We always make sure the latest version of Avid or Adobe Production Premium runs great on it. We are asked constantly about Sandy Bridge and if we recommend it. As of today we do NOT recommend Sandy Bridge for high end NLE workstations. We feel that if you need a new machine today, your best solution is to stick with an X58 based machine like our DIY8 build.
