RAM buffer systems for realtime output
Canopus realtime DV editing solutions feature an onboard FIFO memory buffer to store eight frames of uncompressed video. This buffer allows steady DV data flow during realtime DV output, not achievable using OHCI cards. In addition, these solutions give EDIUS the ability to allocate additional system RAM to act as a buffer for realtime playback. As the naming suggests, EDIUS instructs the RAM to process footage on the timeline in advance during playback, assisting the CPU further during more complex sequences involving numerous effects, graphics and video layers. The more RAM within the system, the greater the size that the RAM buffer may be set to.

Realtime uncompressed analog output
Canopus realtime DV solutions output uncompressed YUV 4:2:2 analog video while editing in EDIUS. The component video output featured with DVStorm2 Pro and DVRex RT series cards, provide connectivity to broadcast monitors for high-quality image preview. When using EDIUS on its own, editors must either rely on a small RGB-based preview window to customize color-related settings such as color correction and chroma key, or use either a DV deck or digital video converter to output to a video monitor. Using one of Canopus ’s realtime hardware solutions solves this problem by providing uncompressed analog output directly from the editing system to a video monitor, with no penalty on system performance.

DMA video overlay for graphics preview
In OHCI mode, EDIUS uses software-based processing to display video within the Monitor window of the interface. Canopus realtime DV cards process video overlay using hardware. Video overlay data is written to the graphics card using Direct Memory Access (DMA). This results in a lesser load being placed on the CPU during editing and realtime playback within EDIUS and hence, results in better realtime performance.

Frame-accurate DV device control
Canopus’s proprietary hardware and legendary device control driver design allows frame-accurate capture and output to DV devices, providing true Insert Editing functionality with EDIUS, something not achievable using OHCI cards. The DV signal through a normal OHCI card fluctuates, causing frame drops and inaccurate deck control. Additionally, the deck control protocol varies with DV devices. The circuitry used on Canopus realtime DV cards stabilizes the DV signal for smooth control , while the device control drivers are designed and customized to control many different types of DV devices.
