Industry infatuation with Apple’s ProRes continues to build, from ARRI’s adoption of ProRes for its Alexa digital cinema camera to AJA’s unveiling at IBC last September of its latest ProRes field recorder, the Ki Pro Mini.

Yesterday Apple released their new software Final Cut Pro X. The release has received, to be generous, mixed reviews. Editors invest a lot of emotion in their editing software. As a group they are disproportionate to the general population left-handed and intelligent. Certainly, they will in time spend more time with their preferred software than the software company marketing reps and probably more than the people that wrote the code. When editors talk about editing software they can be very Read More

Now that Final Cut Pro X has been out for a full 24 hours, the internet has rendered its verdict on the render-free software, and most of the backlash on Twitter seems to be coming from seasoned professionals. Sure, there were bound to be some repercussions when rebooting an application with a 94% customer satisfaction rate. But some of the features Apple dropped — tape ingest, multiclip, backward compatibility, and the viewer itself — make the “Pro” moniker pretty hard to justify. I’m only gett Read More

There can't be many people in this industry that failed to notice Final Cut Pro X was released today. We thought that we would take a look at the better articles and videos that have been posted. First up is an excellent review from Steve Martin on Ken Stone's website. Steve runs Ripple Training and if that rings a bell it was his server that got hacked into and those old military FCPX screengrabs stolen. Concise and well written it was probably the best 'A first look' article we have seen Read More

June 21st, 2011, was met with the news that Final Cut Pro X was finally available and what a thrill ride it has been! Professionals all over the COW -- all over the world -- have been debating, scurrying to test and review Apple's newest app. One such pro, Walter Biscardi, ran straight to purchase FCP X with all the enthusiasm of a kid going to the circus or a great new comic flick, but did he find what he wanted? Read on the see what Walter has to say about FCP X. Read More

After a day of reading the forums, tweeting, and scanning the blogosphere, two COW leaders had a lot to talk about. Rich and Walter are not casual Final Cut Pro users... they've used it since version 1 and literally built their businesses using Apple tools. For them, today was the end of an era (Final Cut Studio and Final Cut Server were removed from sale). While both hope for the future, they each have strong opinions why they can't implement Final Cut Pro X into their postproduction facilities Read More

Final Cut Pro X is finally here and I've been playing around with it this morning. I haven't used it for any projects yet, so don't consider this a formal review, but here are my first impressions.

As a software developer, I understand that a 1.0 release is difficult and not every feature can be added. However, I feel that Apple made some glaring omissions with FCPX that I will cover in the "ugly" section. Read More

It would be redundant of me to, once again, emphasize just how important the quality of the audio is both when planning preproduction, when shooting, and in post production.

For those many who have begun much of their filming using the DSLR's which, aside from being great for the photo enthusiast, can produce some beautiful video footage, but to the user's dismay, the audio quality for any of the DSLRs that I have heard is quite dreadful. Fortunately there is software that can, with little Read More

AJA's latest acquisition solution is a winner.

AJA is now shipping the Ki Pro Mini, a major step forward in the company’s line of direct-from-camera acquisition products. First came the I/O HD, a product I reviewed at its introduction some four years ago. At that point, its ability to transcode any input into ProRes was revolutionary but I remarked what was needed was some way to make it portable and record on the fly. Well, two years later came the KiPro, a product which remains a hot item. Read More

When Premiere Pro CS 5.0 came out I really didn’t think nonlinear editing tools could get any better. The new Mercury engine in Premiere Pro was amazing. The ability to edit multiple formats in the same timeline without any decrease in performance just blew me away.

We all know time is money. As budgets get smaller and the projects get bigger the post production specialist needs efficient tools that work smart and fast. So what could Adobe do with their new version to make me like it even Read More
