As we enter an age where our raw footage is either so compressed that recompression for an online edit seems like a very silly option, or so beautifully flexible that we shouldn’t be binding it with the permanence many budgets and minds associate with a transcode to ProRes, the stage is being set for raw workflows based in metadata. This is where Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 shines. Read More

Q: What are the latest trends you're seeing in production and post production?
A: The biggest trend in Post Production is the decision that many Apple Final Cut Pro editors are faced with, now that FCPX is available. We are spending a lot of time talking to our customers about the many options available to them. Adobe and Avid are both offering special "switcher" or "crossgrade" promotions with discounts at 50% or more. We've seen great interest from all levels of customer’s especially po Read More

Final Cut has jumped a couple of versions – it’s now called Final Cut Pro X, and this (apart from a likeness to ‘OS X’) is probably because the version is 10, whereas my previous up-to-date Final Cut was 7.0.3. This X version has been incredibly contentious, with some Final Cut professionals panning the software and even demanding (and sometimes even getting) their money back. The main causes for concern seem to be FCPX not being able to open legacy projects – which I concur is a pretty incredi Read More

The day has finally come where someone like me — who is always trying to expand his editing skills — no longer has to purchase a used Avid Adrenaline and an old version of Media Composer to really learn the Avid Media Composer suite.

Avid, AJA and Matrox have come together to embrace Media Composer’s newly developed third-party hardware support. AJA’s involvement, announced at NAB, is the IO Express — a powerful input, output and monitoring solution. Read More

Lacking some of the bells and whistles of its pricier competitors, but Datavideo's DN-60 compact flash card recorder gets the job done at a fraction of the cost. If you've got an aging DV or HDV camcorder whose heads are beginning to fail, or perhaps you simply want to step into the digital age, but your older camera still delivers great footage, then strapping a direct-capture-device onto that prized piece of video history may be exactly what the geriatrician ordered. With all the craziness of the Final Cut X going on, people threatening to switch NLE’s, wondering where to go and every blogger writing 10 articles about why FCPX is great or why it isn’t, I decided to take action. I didn’t want to write about it right away though. Cammon and I made our video about why you can’t use FCPX on a feature and that’s that. Read More

Last night I was invited to be part of a panel discussion held by WIFV at the Discovery Networks HQ in Silver Spring, and for me it really underscored just how badly Apple has dropped the ball in regards to the launch of FCP X in the eyes of the pro community. The discussion was two hours long and quite heated at times, but the bottom line was clear: Apple burned bridges with people from all walks of professional production life. Read More
