The interest in HDSLR production and post shows no sign of waning. Although some of this information will seem redundant with earlier articles, I decided it was a good time to set down a working recipe of how I like to deal with these files. To some extend this is a “refresh” of the Round II article, given the things I’ve learned since then. The Canon cameras are the dominant choice, but that’s for today. Nikon is coming on strong with its D7000 and Panasonic has made a serious entry into the la Read More

Well here’s something I wasn’t aware of: Adobe’s online review and approval portal CS Review supports your editing sequences for review and approval right out of Premiere Pro CS5, via the CS Live button. This video popped up the other day and is a quick rundown on exactly how the process works. Basically it’s a way to encode, upload, have people view and comment and then get those review comments downloaded right into Premiere Pro CS5. Read More

As Adobe updates the capabilities of its new Mercury Playback Engine, Premiere Pro editors are rethinking theirs.

At IBC, Adobe announced that the BBC was adding 2,000 seats of Premiere Pro software for its news-editing operations. According to Karl Soule, technical evangelist of dynamic media for Adobe, the demands of high-end broadcast outfits such as the Beeb partially steered the development of the CS5 suite itself, which was released in April. Nearly any modern laptop or desktop computer has enough horsepower to run the leading graphics, editing or encoding applications. The right choice depends on your need for expandability, interconnectivity and/or performance with specific formats.

I do a lot of Apple Final Cut Pro editing, so I stick with Macs. This also equips me for the other possibilities, including Adobe CS5, Avid Media Composer 5, Media 100 or Autodesk Smoke for the Mac. If I opted to set up a Windows partition under B Read More

Adobe CS 5 brings to the table a standard that requires others to play catch up. By now it is no secret that the key to this very significant jump is Adobe's new 64 bit Mercury engine. While not all of the Adobe applications have been re-written as 64 bit the ones most used, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop Extended and Media Encoder are those that really harness the power and benefits of this suite. What Adobe's CS5 does provide overall is greater confidence and speed for creating and del Read More

Watch as I use real-world examples of how I work using SmartSound Sonicfire Pro 5 with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 in a broadcast bumper. The first video is an “over-the-shoulder” view of the production process with little explanation of why I’m choosing specific tools, but rather a fast-paced overview of just how simple it is to select and edit the music soundtrack to work with the various parts of the video; including voice over and interview clips. As an editor, I’ve probably used a dozen different editing systems for billable gigs. If you add the other systems I’ve reviewed, but didn’t use on client projects, coupled with those I’ve had working exposure to, that’s easily twice as many. This experience gives one a keen awareness of the pros and cons of different product designs. When you spend eight, ten, twelve hours or more staring at a screen, the user interface becomes a key factor in whether the system helps or hinders your work. Read More

Ten years ago there were few options for professional non-linear editing. Avid had the lion’s share with their Media Composer and Film Composer products, and for the slightly lower budget there was Avid MCXpress (distinct from Xpress DV), then the rest of the market was split across products from Media 100, Sony and a few others. All were expensive, complicated and difficult to get. Read More
