It is time to retire the “old” video editing computer that I built for Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 in early 2009. It isn’t that it wasn’t fast enough for my workflow but I got an offer I couldn’t refuse to sell it and have decided that the timing was right for me to build an even faster video editing computer for when Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 is released. I expect Adobe will announce Premiere Pro CS6 and the entire Production Premium CS6 suite at NAB 2012 in April and will release the software in June Read More

With last year's introduction of the Thunderbolt interface, the mobile editing workstation really came into its own. Some observers speculated that the super-high-speed jack, which makes incredibly powerful peripherals truly portable, was a signal of the impending demise of the decidedly non-portable Mac Pro tower. The June 2011 release of Apple’s new Final Cut Pro X set off a firestorm that reverberated across the globe—at least in video circles. The hotly anticipated new version of Apple's flagship video software was unexpectedly accompanied by the immediate removal of the previous version—Final Cut Pro 7—along with the company's Final Cut Server and Final Cut Express apps, from retail distribution. That alone had longtime users jumping ship from the only nonlinear video editor many of them had ever used Read More

Q: Can you tell us about AJA's technology that supports the new Avid products?

A: Avid's release of 6.0 software for Media Composer and Symphony as well as the 10.0 release of NewsCutter introduces a new SDK structure for third party hardware known as Open I/O. Through Open I/O, end users can utilize any of our current IO hardware including KONA 3G, KONA LHi, KONA LHe Plus, Io Express, Io XT and even the legacy KONA 3. This new freedom allows Avid users to move to the most powerful hardwar Read More

The inside story of reality TV giants Bunim/Murray Productions, and their trip from Avid Media Composer to Apple Final Cut Pro...and back again.

Bunim/Murray Productions started twenty-five years ago when Jon Murray and Mary-Ellis Bunim shared the same agent. Mary-Ellis had a background in soap operas, Jon had a background in TV news. That combination of soap opera storytelling and documentary sensibilities came together to create the groundbreaking hit for MTV, The Real World. Bunim/Murray Read More

It’s an exciting time to be a filmmaker. Amazing tools, amazing prices. There’s a funny thing about having many wonderful options though—it can lead to unhappiness. Unlimited options create the expectation of 100% satisfaction, which inevitably leads to disappointment. This is why you’ll happily watch the last three-quarters of Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever on HBO because it’s “better than wha Read More

Thunderbolt is a new, high-speed, dual-protocol I/O technology designed by Intel and introduced by Apple that delivers amazing performance, with ease & simplicity. It makes attaching Thunderbolt enabled storage and I/O cards a breeze. All of the current Apple iMacs, MacBook Pros, MacBook Airs and Mac Minis have Thunderbolt. Today’s iMacs with Thunderbolt no longer have the drawback of limited upgradeability. They are easily expandable and support video capture and output as well as professional Read More
