When most of us started as editors, we likely substituted cheesy video effects for content and creativity. Some of us may have even chosen our NLE based on the number of included video effects. That's why I'm always hesitant to gush over any effects package: As many as I have installed, tried, uninstalled, or kept, I invariably wind up using only a few o Read More

A bit of surprising news came across the tubes just the other day about one of the workhorse tool companies of post-production. That news was that Automatic Duck, and its founder and face man Wes Plate, had been scooped up by Adobe. It was quite a surprise to me as I have always seen Automatic Duck as a platform independent company. While they specifically made plugs-ins for Adobe After Effects and Apple Final Cut Pro these tools made it possible to to move edits into other systems including Avi Read More

Trying to quantify the GPU in a Premiere Pro…For the editing and pro community, it is a big deal. It is something that I’ve wanted to do for some time, but I had no idea how complicated and time consuming this would be! I went into this endeavor thinking that I would clearly delineate between different Quadro level cards and along the way understand what each one offered in the way of performance. I was methodical in setting up my system and in trying to create real-world tests that would e Read More

Premiere Pro in Adobe CS 5 was a watershed release. The program was written from the ground up in 64-bit environment that is fully exploited on the Mac OS X and the very stable Windows 7 system. The kind of hiccups running Premiere in a 32-bit funky Windows XP operating system are mostly banished. Refinements to this aspect of the engine in CS5.5 is that the 64-bit addressing of using the CPU cores has been further optimized improving overall stability when editing projects with large files, i.e Read More

By now you’ve heard that Wes Plate has joined the Adobe Product Marketing Team. For those who might not know exactly who this guy is, he’s been “the guy” in the industry for years who has made various production tools talk to each other. And not just a simple, “move parts of my projects into something else,” but help the apps talk to each other in a way that brought about very meaningful creative collaborations between artists no matter how what they used. You can view the official press release here and read a nice explanation of the acquisition here. As history repeats itself and Adobe snaps up a $20K+ color grading app just like Apple did when they acquired Silicon Color, distributors of Final Touch, I am here to officially pronounce Final Cut Studio dead. Maybe you were hanging on with Apple’s recent move to put copies of FCS 3 back on the shelves but I’ve got a 500 dollar door stop, err, copy of Shake that serves as a reminder of Apple’s re Read More
