Just before an Avid-hosted event last night on the Warner Bros. lot, editors who gathered there were discussing the shortfalls of FCP X as well as the direction of Adobe and Avid. The buzz was palpable. Inside the Steven J. Ross theater, Avid brought the troops together to emphasize its commitment to the professional market, hammering home that their focus is us: the editors. It was good to hear at a time when some industry people and businesses are feeling abandoned after the release of FCP Read More

On Wednesday evening Avid held its Committed to the Professional event on the Warner Brothers Studio lot in Burbank California. The event was announced just over a week ago in a blog post by Avid’s CEO. I would have loved to attend the gathering but since it was in California and I’m in Tennessee it just wasn’t meant to be. But there were some tweets that came out of the event by the #livetoedit hashtag. Read More

In the first release of Final Cut Pro X, the interaction with I/O devices such as the Matrox MXO2 products is different than with previous versions of Final Cut Pro when it comes to capturing, monitoring, and outputting video. Exporting to H.264 files from the new Compressor 4 using Matrox MAX-enabled MXO2 devices remains up to 5 times faster than software alone. Read More

The newest tool we have in our bag of tricks is the Matrox Convert DVI Plus. What I thought would be just another scan converter has become a swish army knife to our video needs. The ability to take a raw DVI source signal input and send it out – SDI, Component, and Composite is worth the money. No longer do we have to route the video through multiple pieces of equipment to get it our screens. Read More

I didn’t always use Final Cut Pro, and I didn’t start using it from version 1. I was a late convert. I started out using Avid Media Composer. But I did start using it after version 3 came out. Before that I, and many other editors, begged and pleaded with the companies we worked with to use their Avids, after hours, to do our side projects. But then FCP came out, and was cheap, so we could then use it to do all of our side work. And I did use it for a lot of projects, but nothing for broad Read More

No, that title is NOT a snide or sarcastic remark. That’s an honest Thank You to Apple. In 2000 when I opened the doors to Biscardi Creative Media my realistic three options for an NLE were Avid, Media 100 and Final Cut Pro. Obviously I went with Final Cut Pro in large part because of the cost, though it still cost me almost $30,000 to build an entire suite from nothing. I have proceeded to use that tool right up until today, some 11 years. What Apple did over that time was to rely on thi Read More

It’s official. Today, after 15 years, OneRiver Media officially purchased our first licensed seat of Avid Media Composer. This was actually a long time coming, as we’re constantly in situations where Final Cut Pro 7 has limitations in how we work in the timeline. And don’t get me wrong; we’re not completely jumping ship from Final Cut Pro. We still have several projects that are in Final Cut Pro 7 right now, and may even continue to use Final Cut Pro 7 until we get solid hardware migration worki Read More
