Like many others I have been eagerly hoping, waiting and anticipating a major upgrade of Final Cut Pro for about 12 months now. Am I a Pro Editor? Well, how do you define “Pro”? If you were to argue that editing is potentially an income source, then I suppose yes, I’d qualify. Other’s would argue I’m not “Pro” because I don’t edit for a living or my main source of income. Some would say I am definitely not “Pro” because I do not own Final Cut Studio. Quite frankly in my opinion it’s not impor Read More

It’s official. Today, after 15 years, OneRiver Media officially purchased our first licensed seat of Avid Media Composer. This was actually a long time coming, as we’re constantly in situations where Final Cut Pro 7 has limitations in how we work in the timeline. And don’t get me wrong; we’re not completely jumping ship from Final Cut Pro. We still have several projects that are in Final Cut Pro 7 right now, and may even continue to use Final Cut Pro 7 until we get solid hardware migration worki Read More

History tells us that the software industry does not evolve linearly. Instead it evolves with sudden bursts of disruption followed by a lengthy period of normalization followed by another burst of disruption. I think it’s fair to say that we are at the tail end of one of those cyclical bursts as it relates to how content is authored, but we are only at the beginning of a profound period of normalization as it relates to how content is delivered, consumed, and monetized. This round of disruption Read More

The most interesting tid-bit to come out of the whole Final Cut Pro X preview at Tuesday night’s SuperMeet came not during the hour long on-stage demo but rather it was during the time after as I walked around the SuperMeet expo and talked to a number of developers and fellow editors to get their reaction to FCP X. The reaction was mostly cautiously optimistic. I also happened into a conversation with someone who works for Apple and had been (or maybe still is) on the FCP team. And then when I g Read More

I recently got my hands on a Drobo FS from Data Robotics, and I've been using it intensively for some time now. If you're interested in the Drobo, then this two-part review is perhaps the longest and most thorough look at the device you'll find anywhere. Indeed, it's more than just a review—In Part 1 I dig into Data Robotics patent filings so I can explain how the device works. In Part 2, I'll describe how the Drobo functions in day-to-day use. I got my hands on an AJA IO Express and so far I am loving it. As I have explained before, I decided to go with a the 17 inch MacBook Pro for my home editing system because I usually work in other offices where Mac Pros are provided. The AJA IO Express is a great upgrade for my system. It’s takes it up a step or two in terms of making me feel like I have a complete system on the go or in the office. So far I have used it with Avid Media Composer 5.5 (seems that my H.264 AMA media is a bit more s Read More
