When Action 3D Productions hired an editor to cut the concert film Phish 3D, it made sense that they’d go to Don Wilson's Americana Media. Rather than tell you my favorite new features of Premiere Pro CS5 and the new video suite, I’d thought I’d blog about some comments I heard on the NAB show floor today.

Attendee on GPU acceleration in Premiere: “I recently bought a new computer that did not have a supported Mercury hardware card(NVIDIA CUDA) and I was relieved to see that Mercury running in 64 bit software mode was totally fast. I just spent a ton of money on an ATI card and it looks like it will work great with Mercury. Read More

While we wait for AMA support of AVCHD there is an improvement that I found that some may know but I thought I would share it here for those that missed it.

Step one - Convert AVCHD (.mts etc.) file to avi using Cineform Neo Scene. This $100 product is gaining alot of attention because other NLEs are beginning to support the Cineform Codec natively. This works with cameras like the Canon 5D/7D too. It converts the color space to 4:2:2, handles 24p correctly and is considered visually lo Read More

Besides all the advantages and possibilities shooting with a HDSLR offers, there are some major drawbacks. For me the biggest problems are: rolling shutter (but even the red has it), no audio control and the too contrasty, over-compressed, 4:2:0 h264 output. You can create or download a “flat-look” profile for your camera, which basically eliminates contrast by lifting blacks and crushing highlights when the camera sensor processes the image before compressing it. After playing around and testin Read More

Over the past year Pioneer Blu-ray burners and our Blu-ray burner bundles have become one of the biggest sellers on our website. Avid, Adobe, Sony, Grass Valley and now even Apple support Blu-ray exporting and authoring. It's hard to believe another year has gone by. I think 2009 was one of the most challenging years for our industry. The troubled US economy created budget problems for videographers, video editors and producers on every level. In today's economy every Penney counts and before we invest in new technology, we have to be sure of the benefits.

In 2009 Tapeless camcorders started dominating the landscape, at every level of video production, each with their own unique wrinkles and complexity. Th Read More
