Apple has been known for being very ‘i’ centric with it’s devices – often only allowing Mac-able applications to run on many of the products Apple sells. So we were all taken aback with the big news coming from Avid’s corner that Avid Studio editing software will now run on Apple’s iPad. Read More

It is time to retire the “old” video editing computer that I built for Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 in early 2009. It isn’t that it wasn’t fast enough for my workflow but I got an offer I couldn’t refuse to sell it and have decided that the timing was right for me to build an even faster video editing computer for when Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 is released. I expect Adobe will announce Premiere Pro CS6 and the entire Production Premium CS6 suite at NAB 2012 in April and will release the software in June Read More

FCP X or in the more unforgiving circles iMovie Pro has divided opinion. It has alienated many people who were die hard FCP 7 users, like me, due to the lack of key features and no backward compatibility with the older system. I have more of less moved over to Premiere due to increasingly impressive features (I am also eyeing the new Avid MC6 which has taken a giant leap forward with the new release, but more on that in a future post) but I am still checking out FCP X. I own it and would never d Read More

Jeremiah switched from Final Cut Pro to Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 last summer, and three projects later, he's still happy. But when he wrote his original article, there was one thing he never considered - losing his existing plug-ins he used in FCP. Read More

Adobe Systems has released a second advance look at Photoshop CS6 that shows new work to give a hardware boost to the image-editing software. The graphics processing unit (GPU) speeds the Liquify tool, which lets people smear images in a finger-painting way, according to a Zorana Gee, a Photoshop product manager. She demonstrated the change in a YouTube video, the second in what looks to be a series of previews of the software. Read More

Avid, today announced the release of its first video editing application for the iPad—Avid Studio, available immediately at the Apple App Store. Leveraging decades of experience working closely with the world’s leading movie and television studios, Avid has made the Avid Studio app for the iPad easy enough for first-timers, yet sophisticated enough for more advanced editors. As the first iPad app for video editing to offer frame-by-frame editing accuracy and access to all kinds of media, Avid S Read More

The high-performance video RAID5 you need for today’s modern Mac-based video editing systems As many ProVideo Coalition readers may recall, I have written about disk arrays from PROMISE before, although the last time it was primarily to be used with a computer with an eSATA port. Now that all Mac computers (except for the MacPro tower) use a Thunderbolt port, many are looking for a disk array which will have the appropriate connection and that will be at least as fast as what they got previo Read More

With its release, Final Cut Pro X was widely panned by the professional editing community, who have been leaving their beloved editing system in droves. For most pros, FCP X had the look and feel more in line with iMovie or iPhoto than a professional NLE system. Because of this, Adobe and Avid have been stealing many Final Cut Pro users in the past year with much improved systems of their own. Read More

If any single movie can be identified as the toast of Sundance 2012, it might be The Surrogate, which arrived with little fanfare to tell the bleak-sounding story of the late journalist and poet Mark O'Brien, a quadriplegic polio survivor spending much of his time in an iron lung. But O'Brien had, against the odds, a successful writing career that makes his story inspirational. One of the pieces he left behind dealt with his experience seeking a sexual surrogate. Writer-director Ben Lewin, hi Read More

XML (eXtensible Markup Language) has become a common method of data interchange between postproduction applications. Standard XML variations are like Romance languages: one version is as different from another as German is from French; thus, translation software is required. Apple's Final Cut Pro X was updated to include XML interchange, but this new version of XML (labeled FCP XML) is completely different from the XML format used in FCP 7. Stretching the language analogy, FCP 7's XML is as diff Read More
